Comment: He seemed really excited about what he was doing. He wasn't good at teaching to the audience really, it just seemed like he was talking to himself and just wrote off his notes. The exams were okay, the first was tough because they are really picky about neatness and how you your work. I only got by because I had a great GSI.

Comment: Your classic case of a college professor, extremely fervent about math, really tries to be funny (but not so effective), and not as articulate in explaining concepts as expected but overall class is easy for anyone coming in with 5's on Calc. AB/BC :D

MATH 1A (Spring 2011)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
64 83 77 44 40

Comment: For 1A, he teaches from the book, so readings are not absolutely necessary. He isn't a horrendous instructor, but his lectures tend to be boring and filled with "umms". This does not mean that it is okay to skip on his lectures, because a lot of unexpected material that is gone over in lecture are on the final exams. He tends to make errors in simple arithmetic & algebra during lectures, which is probably not a good thing. The exams are reasonable in difficulty, but they are far from easy.

Comment: The first few days in this class, you are simply just lost. "Ummmm" seems to be his favorite vocabulary word and his writing/notation seems very unclear. However, just give him some time. Over the course of the semester, I grew to understand Steel (which I'm not sure is a great thing) and could generally follow his lectures and his notation. Just be patient with him. The homework is easy and the tests are generally fair. An OKAY professor.

MATH 1A (Spring 2011)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm

Comment: Steel's midterms were quite straightforward. Math 1A is considered a weeder class, and to have moderately doable exams are what I tend to look for regardless of lecture charisma/style. The final was tough, but the curve very generous. I had no idea what my grade was at the end, but ended with an A after taking Calc AB in high school, but really, there is no comparison to the level of difficulty.

Comment: having taken calc ab in high school, calc 1a was fine. however steel over-complicates simple concepts and makes them incomprehensible at times. the first midterm was definitely intimidating however if you just memorize the theorems that he tells you to for each exam and do the hw, it should be manageable

Comment: I may be the only person here who didn't hate Steel. OK, maybe "functions as Adam and Eve, rational numbers as the limit of irrational approximations, unique because...something about a least upper bound," may not have been the best thing to say on the first day, but having never had calculus, I didn't think his lectures were too difficult to comprehend. Midterm 1 was moderately hard, Midterm 2 was easy, Final was FUCKED (but I guess doable in three hours). He did seem to listen to the GSIs input (i.e. making harder questions worth fewer points, lowering the criteria for an A+), and ultimately gave 25% As, 25% Bs, and only flunked a few people, so it was more than possible to do well (I ended up with an A+).

Comment: Hard class, but the curve is fair. On both midterms I got one standard deviation below the average. I think I was average in terms of quizzes and homework (among my section). I think I did okay on the final exam because in the end I got a B- which I was extremely happy about.

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
24 100 83 16 48

Comment: Boring lecturer. If you do go to lecture, he explains the concepts at a fairly basic level, sometimes goes over the derivation, and then covers a bunch of examples. The sections go over enough to be sufficient imo. Basically do the hw and understand what's going on in discussion and the class should be fairly straightforward. I did think the final was a bit tougher than the midterms, simply because it covered so much material and Steel didn't allow a cheat sheet so everything needed to be memorized.

Comment: I'm the type of person that goes to every lecture for a class. Not for math 53 was steel.. The first lecture was full (like everyone says), and then people started to dwindle. The second lecture my friend and I decided to time on average how often a person left the classroom and it was a little over a minute between people. If you have a good gsi it's nice, but mine was not great. So, I read the book and did the homeworks with my friend. The homeworks and quizzes were not bad at all. I think as long as you get a grasp of the material conceptually and do practice problems, you should be fine. Steel doesn't allow cheat sheets and also makes you memorize definitions from the book which was annoying. Overall, it wasn't a terrible class. Just don't do what I did and waste time going to lecture. Also, every time I saw him (except for at the final), Steel wore the same blue/white button up shirt.

Comment: Do not attend his lectures as you will have difficulty in understanding them. Find a good GSI and try to learn from section after reading the section. Steel's HW assignments are not bad at all. He also provides good resources for his midterms and final to help prepare you. However, I recommend try and see him for OH as he may be more help in person, rather than in lecture.

Comment: You'll see him first day of lecture, first midterm, second midterm, and at the finals at most. His assignments and most parts of his tests are fair except the T/F questions which are pretty hard. I recommend attending the discussion section but lectures are very likely be pointless. It is possible to pull an A without going to lecture and studying on your own.

Comment: If you are forced to sign up for his lecture, like I was, I would honestly suggest just not going. You can tell that he is a very smart mathematician, but when it comes to teaching Multivariate Calculus to a bunch of Freshman and Sophomores, he is completely inept. He mumbles into the board, writes messily, and honestly, you're probably better off if you don't hear what he says. His explanations are abstruse and confusing. I relied on my GSI to learn all the subject matter. The midterms weren't terrible, but the final was not at all on what he told us it would be on.

Comment: I'm sure Steel is an excellent mathematician but the poor guy doesn't know how to teach! His lectures were unbelievably boring (and his handwriting wasn't the easiest to read). He seemed nervous to be standing in front of a room full of students, even though the number of people in lecture was severely dwindling a few weeks into the class.
