Comment: I love Lin Laoshi. She was so great at explaining and she helped me develop my Mandarin so quickly. I actually understood Mandarin fairly well before and it wasn't fair because some students started out knowing nothing while others knew a lot more. I had to spend so much time learning how to write and she does not curve. I messed up by not studying for the first test (which was the easiest test) and i ended with a 93.4% and that was an A- which I was disappointed in because I studied so hard for this class. Make sure you take the time and learn how to write it's so important for the success in this class. Overall, I loved this class and it was probably my favorite class at Berkeley. I definitely recommend this class I'm pretty sure it improved my Mandarin by 60%.

Comment: Lin laoshi was fun to learn from. She was very helpful during office hours and always tried to answer our questions, if we asked. The classroom was a friendly environment because we all saw each other every day and worked with each other on the oral tests. It is not an easy class without a basis in the basics, because you learn speaking in addition to reading and writing traditional characters. I believe anyone can do well if they allot ten hours a week studying as suggested. I am glad I took the course.

Comment: Work hard for that A because although most get A's, you're going to have to work for it. She's an amazing Chinese professor for Berkeley but be ready for constant everyday, day-to-day required work. It's not just weekly assignments but you also have a composition due one day, oral skit due the next, unit test the next day after, and so on. If you're going to take this course, make sure you have around 3 hours at least to study for it everyday. This is for at least an A-. I wanted to take Chinese 10Y with Lin laoshi next semester however as a CS major I doubt I can for a letter grade. I did enjoy learning Chinese in this class but wish I had more time for assignments (unrealistic, I know) or just less of a workload, more concept, anything....

Comment: Really cute and nice! Wish I could've seen more of her throughout the week instead of the GSI (GSI took three days, she took two). The class might seem really fast-paced at first, but the sudden immersion into the language makes you learn the material faster since it keeps you on your toes and forces you to study. Character quizzes and unit tests aren't that hard if you study for them. Homework everyday, but it's pretty simple and they don't mark you down if you don't do it.

Comment: Lin laoshi was very enthusiastic and taught the class using powerpoints. Her exams were pretty easy. There was daily homework but it was also very easy. She even recommended me to go to the native speaker class for the next semester.

Comment: Lin Laoshi is super sweet and nice! She has every class composed in a neat powerpoint which she posts so that you can review the grammar. Similar to other students, I took this class knowing some Cantonese from when I previously went to Chinese School. Even taking this one semester, you learn an equivalent to one year of Mandarin. It is really helpful and interesting especially being in a class where the students are learning the language at a similar pace as you. It is amusing to compare how we grew up in America. The workload is about 30min-60min of homework per day. It is sort of like a typical high school language course. The class is broken down so that each assignment is not worth that much. Your grade will be bufferred by thousands of points so don't worry if you miss points here and there. As long as you do the work, you'll probably end up with an A. If you're an engineering or science major, it will definitely help buffer your GPA. I would highly recommend taking this course sometime during your stay in Berkeley if you are interesting in (re-)learning Chinese! Take it to impress your parents and grandparents!

Comment: A super sweet professor- she's always very enthusiastic in class and more than willing to help you out during office hours. The class itself takes a ton of time (it IS a language, after all), but if you're willing to put in the effort, it definitely pays off!

Comment: Exams and assignments aren't easy, but I would say that they are doable. You just have to try really hard. Or you can always go to Lin laoshi's (teacher) office hours and ask her for help. Lin laoshi is very kind and shows a sincere effort when it comes to her students. She really takes her time in trying to teach Chinese to her students. I am really glad that I choice to stay in Chinese 1Y even though it was very difficult for me. I can't wait for another great semester in Chinese 10Y with Lin laoshi again.
