Comment: CS150 is hard, but Pister knows his stuff and an excellent lecturer.

Comment: A hardware guy, knows only "high level" of 150 project. Design very bad checkpoints for the project and did not understand details about it. can't answer students' questions about project. We learn everything from TA. Follow John, not him, if you want to take this course.

Comment: This is a very difficult class. Be prepared to spend hours in the lab. Don't take this class with other difficult tech classes!

Comment: Pister is an okay lecturer and pretty enthusiastic about the material. However, our homework assignments were way too hard. Not even my junior-year EE friends could answer them. The TAs recognized they were ridiculously hard so during OHs, they would basically give out answers (but Pister refused to answer homework questions in his OH). Needless to say, all the OHs were packed. I sure learned a ton of EE though and in retrospect, I had some fun.

Comment: Pister has fair assignments and exams, but I think what he lacks is pacing to his lectures and to the course. During lecture, he tends to move at whatever pace he deems fit, and it usually exceeds a comfortable speed for the class to learn at. As such, lectures were not all too helpful, and much of the learning came from attending discussion and office hours.

Comment: This class was ridiculous. According to reviews Pister is an awesome upper div professor, but taking EE42 with him was a miserable experience. It's only a 3 unit class, but it was more time consuming than all of my other classes combined and I still didn't learn a single thing about circuits. Exams were based on homework, but I didn't understand the homework (despite the fact that I went to lecture, office hours, and discussion every week) and the grading was all over the place. My passing the class completely depended on the curve which said absolutely nothing about who actually knew what was going on. I don't recommend taking 42 with him but it seems like if you already know the basics he would be great for an upper division class because he's clearly very interested in the subject and knows a lot.

Comment: Pister started out horribly since he has never taught this class for a long time, and the first few weeks of class were chaotic with rooms changing, waitlist, and the fact that he assumed everyone knows what V, I, and R mean already before going to the first class. He got better with time, and things become much clearer and easier after midterm 1. By the end of the class, I feel like he has definitely become one of the few good professors I have at Berkeley. The GSIs are super awesome and always on Piazza helping people out. If you have the chance to choose between Polla and Pister next year, just pick whichever fits into your schedule and interest best. EE42/100 doesn't help much with most upper divisions, so taking it earlier/later wouldn't make much of a difference though.

Comment: Alright professor overall. Has an ego and can be condescending. He started out horribly with the class since he was used to teaching upper division and didn't know how to accommodate with the CS students who have had no prior college physics experience. Tests were fair and he can be helpful in Office Hours. He gave really hard homeworks which forced students to go to Office Hours and form groups. He got better throughout the semester but really rushed the end which confused the students who haven't taken CS 61C. I would advise in taking this class with Pister if you have a good group.

Comment: He is obviously very smart, but he started off kind of rough since no one knew what was going on. He also crammed too much material in towards the very end, so the final was quite overwhelming. HW also took quite a lot of time. But overall I liked him, and would like to take an upper division course with him sometime in the future.

Comment: Very good teacher, very enthusiastic and provided a large amount of detailed explanation for the diverse topics the course covered. I would have preferred greater coverage of devices (over the more practically based analog design material), though I understand the limitations of the course timeline and I enjoyed the labs and final design project regardless.

Comment: Pister's loves MEMS devices, and it really shows. He's both extremely enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable about the subject, to the point that I don't think he ever finished a lecture on time. The course covers both MEMS physics and fabrication. Exams were open book and notes and pretty fair overall. The homework assignments varied between easy and difficult, but both Pister and Bobby (the GSI) were helpful, and all homework was self-graded. There are some guest lectures throughout the year. If you're interested in MEMS at all, this is a great class to take (unless you're interested in microfluidics, those aren't covered). EE 143 may be useful, depending on your familiarity with device fabrication techniques.

Comment: Building robot bugs is Pister's thing and this class shows it. Very helpful to have taken 143, as much of this class is taking the CMOS processes and reapplying them for making MEMS structures.
