Comment: I was personally not a fan of Vazirani's teaching mentality: Everything is simple if you look at it the right way, and if you don't understand something you haven't spent long enough thinking about it. Truthfully a lot of material in 70 feels this way, that there's always a twist, or a different angle, that makes a problem easy. But getting there is challenging, and when students are already spending most of their lives on a course, "spend more time" isn't the most helpful answer. But if you asked Vazirani about a concept, he was always patient and happy to walk you through it. Overall, the material in 70 was really cool!

Comment: Not the best lecturer. Exams were very doable. The only bad thing is that nobody really knew there grade because he only gives cutoff ranges.

Comment: Exams were pretty easy, but homework was annoying. Lectures were a complete waste of time as he was never very interesting or exciting. Reading the course notes was infinitely more helpful than listening to him drone on for 1.5 hours.

Comment: Homeworks and tests are substantially easier than what Sahai gives. Isn't the best lecturer, but is very helpful in office hours. Gives good extra credit problems.

Comment: I don't know why everyone in this class felt the need to complain about everything. The first midterm was incredibly easy and the second midterm and final were completely fair. Vazirani and the GSIs bent over backwards to try to please people...there were weekly homework parties where you could work in groups and ask GSIs/readers for help, and near the end of the semester when the material got tougher they added a second homework party. Homeworks were somewhat time consuming, but they only took time out of a couple days of your week. I thought they were pretty fun and interesting, but I know a lot of people just aren't into discrete math and probability. That really depends on the person. I do agree that Vazirani is a terrible lecturer, but the class notes are so thorough it really doesn't matter. Overall I loved the class--one of my favorites so far at Cal.

Comment: This guy founded quantum computing and directs Berkeley's Quantum Computing center. It is pretty awesome that he's teaching the introductory algorithms and probability course for computer scientists. Vazirani makes available, with every lecture, a nice set of nicely formatted, latex notes. These notes read like a math book, with theorems and proofs. Personally, I found it helpful to work through the notes with a pen and paper, doing the proofs myself. It was also helpful to review the problem set solutions and figure out how they expect you to do the problems. During this class, I felt very "safe", in the sense that he made it clear what we were supposed to assume, what we were supposed to prove, and what we were supposed to memorize. That being said, this class is not a walk in the park. It takes a lot of time to do well, especially if you have not seen probability theory before.

Comment: I don't know why Vazirani gets so much hate. He's a pretty good professor who explains concepts from the ground up, without skipping any steps in explaining theorems, so I don't know why people complain he's a bad lecturer. His voice may be a bit monotonous but it's not that big a deal. Homework assignments and exams are somewhat difficult, but compared to other professors', they're easier (CS70 isn't supposed to be an easy class). Vazirani frequently asks for feedback about the class, exams, etc. and tries his best to make sure students are getting as much out of this class as they can.

Comment: Really nice guy but really bad at lecturer. Provides, if you're lucky, one example every other lecture? Homeworks were sometimes so hard the TAs didn't know how to do them. Very disorganized. Notes/the book was posted only the day before, TA OH were not helpful as well.

Comment: Worst class ever. The teacher and the GSIs had know idea how to manage the class. Assignments sometimes did not even make sense. Solutions to homework were often posted after the midterm. Terrible experience.

Comment: Hands down the worst class I have ever taken at Berkeley, and I have taken lower and upper divs in both EECS and ME. The professor is nice and a genius, but he has no idea how to teach. Lectures, assignments, and exams were seemingly from different courses. Some of the TAs were out to antagonize us. Lecture attendance was staggeringly low. Avoid at all costs. It's sad when you dread this class more than Hilfinger's 61B.

Comment: It's pretty funny Vazirani thinks his webcasts is the cause of low turnout in his lectures. I don't even read the lecture notes he writes. But do read the actual "textbook" of notes in the class, that's real important. Rewarding assignments for the most part, well of course only if you eventually conquer the problem. The exams were not always well written and it hurt me. But the assignments of course are not as hard as Sahai's. But Vazirani tries.

Comment: Vazirani is a pretty dorky guy. His lectures are not all that interesting, and it doesn't help when he's occasionally un-miked. However, he does try his best and always tries to give helpful insight/advice. Exams and assignments are also pretty good at assessing student's knowledge and challenging them. Just be aware of the shift in mentality when it gets to distributions (by this, I mean approaching the subject differently; i.e. don't try to prove a distribution, but rather learn how to apply it).

Comment: I don't think he is a good lecture for CS 70 at all. I skipped more than half of the lectures and three fourths of the discussions, and I think it was a wise decision and I didn't miss anything. Lectures were boring and just a repetition of the reader. I personally can't see any point to attend the lecture especially when webcasting was available. Assignments and exams were reasonable.

Comment: I felt like Umesh wasn't a particularly great lecturer, and his lectures were often a bit dry. Much of what you need to know is in the reader, so lecture isn't necessary. I found the material to be very enjoyable, there are a lot of brain-teasers and logic puzzles in this class, which I really enjoyed. If you understand the material and how to apply it, you will do very well on the midterms.

Comment: I agree with the posters below, Umesh was not a good lecturer at all. Maybe he's better in his quantum computing course (CS194-ish), maybe he's better in CS170 where he wrote the book, but he was downright terrible in this semester's iteration of CS70. Much of the course depends on your TA, and fortunately, all of them are very good (shout out to Andrew for being super active on Piazza). Assignments were tough but doable. I really love the probability part of the class but Umesh spent so much time on the first half (like two, three lectures on induction) and then rushed through the latter half like Buzz Lightyear. Exams were kind of meh, first one was super easy, second one the difficulty soared and the mean dipped; then after the final nobody knew how he did and everyone on Piazza was like R#@#%@@!!%. Overall, it was a dissatisfying experience, and his teaching leaves much to be desired.
