Comment: Very easy class to take! Professor is very enthusiastic about the topics and the few homework assignments are very easy. He drops the lowest test grade (final is not cumulative) which helps a lot.

Comment: Jennifer Arter was the GSI. She was a really good lecturer, made the lectures interesting by showing videos and giving real life examples. Don't need to take notes, just listen to lecture, look at her slides, and read a little bit of the book and you will do fine. The book is pretty interesting.

Comment: He doesn't actually teach the class...it's a GSI, her name is Arter. If you get her, STAY! She makes everything so clear, even though exams were a bit more abstract than I thought. Go to class and you should be fine.

Comment: Professor was very organized and always had slides ready. I think it was either the lecture room or the one and a half hours that made it boring. Mendoza-Denton clearly knew his material, but he didn't show the enthusiasm I would have hoped for. The exams were straightforward; all you needed to do was go over the lecture slides and you would be fine. All multiple choice.

Comment: This is an AMAZING course, especially for your AC requirement. It's easy, not too much of a time commitment, and Mendoza-Denton believes everyone can get an A, so he won't curve you down. Getting an A is easy, too, if you just show up to lecture and discussions and sort of pay attention (not like staring down the professor and deciphering everything he says the whole time, like a physics or engineering course, but more just listening and nodding along). Espcially for STEM majors, this is an easy break of a course, where you can just pad your GPA. It's also super interesting, too, and your interest in the matter will also make it easier to pay attention and follow along with the assignments. The readings get a bit tedious but you just need to know the basic concepts.

Comment: He was decent. Seemed like an okay professor, though he came across as very arrogant at times. Not of much help in particular, as exam preparation deviated significantly from the slides, and he would lecture on material without expressing the importance of knowing it, so it was difficult to know what we were expected to know for exams. There is a poster project worth one-third of your final grade, and my the rubric is extremely misleading: there are criteria that must be hit that are not on the poster at all, and it's difficult to know what they want. I was doing very well in the class and could have gotten an A if not for being dinged on arbitrary points in the poster project. Final was also kind of odd. It's very difficult to do particularly poorly in this class, however.

Comment: I'll start by saying that you SHOULD take this for your AC requirement. I took it because I thought it'd be more proactive to learn about the "why's" of stigma and prejudice instead of the "what's" of all the terrible things that have happened in the past. On that front, this class delivers. Assignments: 25%: your highest scoring exam 15%: your second highest scoring exam 20%: section attendance (you may miss 1 section w/o penalty) 35%: poster (5-page write-up of a hypothetical experiment that tests something you're interested in) 5%: RPP requirement Most of the material is in the form of experiment results, and while they can be boring and repetitive, their conclusions are always interesting, and they're pretty easy to skim through for the important information. Professor Mendoza-Denton arranged the textbook and personally conducted a few experiments in there, probably for a little self-promotion but also because he's one of the leading experts in the field. I came in pretty skeptical about all this "American Cultures" BS, and even though this class annoyed me the most in Fall 2014, I consider it a very valuable use of my time and support mandating the requirement. Seriously, it's scary how easy it is to manipulate performance in individuals with something like stereotype threat, or how oblivious I am to a lot of problems going on around and within me. Like I said, though, I got annoyed a lot by this class. Professor Mendoza-Denton is out to save the world, so the material sometimes took a backseat to the "life-changing revelations" he had to impart to us. I get why he did it (the contact hypothesis), but a lot of the "talk to your neighbor" in lecture and group-work in section looked a lot like stalling to me, as if there just wouldn't be that much material if he went through it beginning to end. He wants everyone to be best friends with each other and with him, which, in a huge college lecture, results in a lot of awkwardness and confusion as to what the hell is going on. The "poster project" had almost zero guidance besides a deceptively simple rubric, and I didn't really know what to look at to study for the midterm/final. At the same time, though, you only have to do weekly 1-page (double-spaced) reflections on the reading (what did you think about it?) and...well, read. Otherwise, there's a midterm, that poster project, and the final. There was maybe one extra assignment in section, but otherwise, this class isn't very stressful. Combined with the very real, very meaningful lessons I managed to come to comprehend, I reiterate, YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS FOR YOUR AC REQUIREMENT. Not only have I learned a lot of cool, cocktail party information, but I know I'm a better, slightly more aware person just by having enrolled in this. Tips: Go to lecture! He puts specific questions on the midterm/final to reward people who came and paid attention. If you decide to talk in class, you may get called on all semester because he's intent on remembering names (despite the impossibility of it) and remembers the same 4-5 people. Read the damn experiments, they're interesting and are all you talk about in section or on tests. Don't worry about AWBR, it came up once or twice the whole semester. Oh, and watch the movie after the midterm, it's an experience. An easy, refreshingly objective, and super interesting way to deal with one of the more dreaded university requirements. Final grade: A-

Comment: I did really poorly on the exams, despite doing all the readings. I don't know why, but the questions were really specific and a lot of the time caught me off guard. But I guess I do poorly in memorization-only based classes. (The tests are all multiple choice and ask details about studies. If you're good at that, you'll get an A.)

Comment: The exams were HORRIBLE!! They were weirdly specific and tricky and asked for information that doesn't even pertain to the course material. But the professor was enthusiastic even though the class focuses too much on the problem behind racism and stating that prejudice exists over and over without really talking about how to work on removing prejudice at all. It's an interesting and easy-ish class except for the tests.

Comment: Tests are badly written but overall the professor is mellow and just wants you to learn about others. That being said, it was a little preachy and politically correct for me personally.

Comment: I sucked at multiple choice exams so it was hard for me. However, I think other students did really well on them so I'm not going to give him a bad rating b/c of that. He did gave you an opportunity to earn 2 extra credit points on the midterm and final (worth 2 questions!). RPP was easy. Attendance can easily be attained. Final project is easy if you follow the rubric. Your exam grades will be the determine factors for the class. Overall, would recommend for AC requirement :)!

Comment: He is a good professor. When he gets into one topic he can be side tracked into another discussion but you will never have to worry about the things he never talked about. The lectures are good and I recommend you go and sit up front and get him to know your name[goes long way]. Exams focus on concepts, results from studies and what is important. Reading can be slightly boring buts some are interesting.

Comment: Professor Mendoza-Denton is a huge figure in his field. He has done a LOT of research that you'll be learning. Readings are on the dense side (especially when it comes to statistical analysis), but the basic intent and results from the research is all that's needed. Exams are straightforward, make sure you know the research, studies, and what they showed. Final poster is pretty easy. In general, the class was moderately low workload and it was probably my easiest A, considering I fell behind on the readings. That said, it was a good way to fill up AC requirement, but honestly this class has made more prejudiced if anything, since now I'm aware of said prejudices.

Comment: Pretty cool class. You learn a lot about psychology and in particular the topics of stigma and prejudiced. There are a few American cultural topics involved. This is an interesting class overall and a very easy A if you put some effort into it and take some interest in the subject matter of the class. Midterms can be tricky; final project - easy, good.

Comment: This class was a joke. 60% of your grade is "participation". Basically show up to discussion and do the final "project" which was basically sitting down and talking with other students in the class, and you're good to go. The professor was alright but I thought he was kinda corny and I wasn't all into psych. Super easy AC course but you don't learn too much
