Comment: Devine is not divine. Avoid his module if you don't have a particular interest in circuits, batteries, etc. The GSIs, Adam and someone else, weren't helpful at all. All they would ask is "What do you think you should do?" If I'm going to a GSI for help, then I don't know what I'm doing.

Comment: He is hit or miss. He was a pretty good teacher, taught well, assignments stimulating, and the labs really fun (got to make a battery and a fuel cell). BUT, never very enthusiastic and his final screwed everyone over. I got near perfects on everything in the class, but then his final was incredibly long and difficult and it dropped my grade in the class. Quite frustrating

Comment: Avoid this meaningless class if possible. Assignments/exams were extremely difficult and had little correlation to lecture. Labs were the worst!!!

Comment: Ok, this is the rating of Professor Devine and not the E10 MSE course itself. The E10 MSE course is totally garbage, since you have no textbook reading and the only thing you can do to keep up with knowing how electrical components work is by studying off of your own textbooks from home or from the library. This course is supposed to be an introductory course to all the major fields of engineering, but it was really a challenging and very not fun course. Although the course may be brutal, the professor is excellent in explaining how electrical circuits work, but his lectures were really for the people who have taken AP Physics and aced their exams with 5's. Great professor, but lame course.

Comment: Took MSE module with Devine this semester and it essentially turned me off MSE. Lectures were all over the place, we never really got the big picture on what we were learning. He's knowledgeable but sometimes pretty unenthusiastic. The biggest problem was the disorganization of the course, as well as the fact that you're supposed to understand a lot more than you should need for an intro course. The GSIs were alright, not bad but not brilliant.

Comment: Devine will assume that you will know everything you need to know to learn from his class. That being said, if you don't know the "basics," then be prepared for a whirlwind of information in this class. The lectures somewhat correlate with each other, but it seems to definitely be only for people really interested in his subject and no one else.

Comment: Devine taught the module for MSE and it was pretty mundane and disorganized. He did tell interesting stories though and the exam wasn't too bad.

Comment: Incredibly time consuming and difficult. Homework assignments were long, and half the course was on quantum. Maybe with a Physics 7C background/different professor, this course would have been more doable.

Comment: Very disorganized professor. It seemed like communication with the GSIs was nonexistent. In each rough third of the class, Devine covered quantum, corrosion, and metal properties, which is not what E45 traditionally consists of. His lectures didn't really help because he rambled on about the material, often repeating the same information within the same lecture and several lectures in a row. Exams and HWs were kind of tricky mostly because he explained the material poorly. Even the GSIs disagreed with the material he taught (some came from his upper-div corrosion course) because it deviated from traditional E45 material so much. Labs are once every 2 weeks, with 6 total. The formal lab write-ups take a while to do. I would take this course another semester if Devine is teaching.

Comment: His homework assignments from the textbook is pretty close pattern for midterms. However, you need to take all lectures. Don't skip the lectures! If you miss it, I think I would be hard to understand what it is going on for the next lecture.

Comment: most fragmented, unorganized teaching. taught material completely out of the realm of the course. even GSIs were thrown off by the irrelevance of the material to traditional E45 coursework

Comment: Devine is a pretty chill guy who cares about you learning the material. Though he teaches the class a bit differently I suppose. I didn't like how the lectures didn't go with the labs. I liked the labs though. pretty fun

Comment: A bad class. It was so disorganized. The professor tried to change the schedule of the class and he barely covered 1/4 of what he said he was going to cover at the beginning of class. To give insight into how bad this was, we were sent an email the night before the final (less than 12 hours before the start of the final) that we were allowed to have a sheet of notes for the exam after I sent him an email the week before where he said that it wasn't allowed. It was not worth it. Wait for Gronsky if you can.

Comment: The structure and subject matter of Devine's lectures can be troublesome to follow at times. He can be rather tangential, and displays a clear bias towards his background in the battery industry. As such, tests are not always reflective of the material taught in class, and labs are completely unrelated to what is going on in lectures. Still, Devine is passionate and readily available to answer any questions.

Comment: Devine is an odd lecturer. The class wasn't much property of materials as it was corrosion and quantum. His homework wasn't that helpful, and the tests were pretty odd. The labs were time consuming and graded pretty hard. The final had a lot less math and more short answers than i was expecting. Worked out ok, I didn't spend that much time on this class, and have no idea what quantum he was doing.

Comment: Labs are way too much work. Devine has an interest in the students but can be a bit boring sometimes. Lectures are based on the textbook, which is horribly written.

Comment: The first half of the class was good. Professor Devine told interesting stories. I hated the second half of the class about electrochem and corrosion though. That single-handedly made me not do a double major in MSE. The final felt like an in class essay with all the writing we had to do. I felt like there should have been more partial credit given out on the midterms also.
