Comment: Easiest 4 units ever. We only had 2 assignments that took me 20 minutes, a term paper that was very manageable, and an open note/open book final. The professor was kind of boring, but she did love the material (she just needed a better way of presenting it). The movies were interesting, guest speakers pretty dull. We did nothing in section except talk about lecture and applying it to our lives. Reading the textbook is not necessary if you just attend lecture. Overall an easy A and one of the easier ways to fulfill your L&S requirements.

Comment: Can't stay awake in this class. Most of the assignments don't really deal with the reading. But the readings are really really important for the final. Lectures are not that important, but note that you will need to cite the guest lecture and the movies that we watch. If I didn't have to take this class for breadth, I would not have normally taken it.

Comment: Easy class. Professor Choy has a lot of enthusiasm for the subject, but isn't the best presenter. She repeats things A LOT. Repetitive, but at the same time let's us know what important concepts are. Assignments were easy and the final was open books and notes.

Comment: Great class to take, especially since Professor Choy combines Filipino/Filipino American History with more contemporary issues, and even incorporated readings of books written by Filipinos, many of whom were able to visit class thanks to Professor Choy. Assignments were reasonable and graded fairly. Really nice teacher overall, just make sure you don't come to class late!

Comment: Lectures are somewhat useless...talks really monotonously. This class has a lot of reading but luckily, there are no exams. There are 4 book reviews (3 pages each), in which Professor Choy gives you the questions she wants you to address in the review but GSIs are very strict on page limit and formatting. The final paper is 10 pages.

Comment: No exams, but the book reviews were really tedious and repetitive. Lecture was really boring. Professor Choy has a really monotonous voice, so I felt like she wasn't very enthusiastic about her lectures, but I noticed that she does like to talk about herself and her work a lot, and she's an enthusiast when it comes to Cal sporting events. The class was heavy on the readings, but not a lot of people in my discussion were on track with it. Discussions were also boring, but attendance is factored into your grade.

Comment: Don't take this class as a freshman, you will regret it. Take some other class to fulfill the AC requirement because you will be stuck in this class with people taking it as a major requirement.

Comment: If you take it pass/no pass, you don't ever have to do the reading or go to lecture. There aren't any exams, so just learn how to get really good at BSing papers. The format for the papers is very rigid and rubric based, so you just have to get all the info on the paper. Read the introductions to the books, write down the main points, get As on all the papers. The final project is somewhat big, but you can BS that pretty easily too. Lectures are horrendously boring and aren't especially relevant to the work that you have to turn in

Comment: Professor Choy seemed a little unfriendly at first, but I saw her in office hours once and she turned out to be really nice. She goes out of her way to help students and loves Glee! I loved her class because I found the books and the comparative nature of the course to be interesting. My GSI Marisol was awesome. Book reviews were repetative but I think it's a good writing exercise.

Comment: The class was extremely boring. Discussions were a waste of time, even though attendance played a part on your grade. The book reports which made up a good portion of your grade were able to be written off a book by reading only the introduction the night before, even though your choice of wording could drop you to much lower grades. All in all, I strongly recommend anyone from taking this course. Waste of time.
