Rotaract Newsletter #3 Spring 2011

Hello Rotaractors!

Thank you everyone who came out to our 3rd General Meeting and helped fold Paper Cranes! With your help, we were able to make hundreds of cranes, and we will be donating them to the Oakland Children’s Hospital! Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 15th, so please mark your calendars!

Rotaract is an international service club for individuals between the ages of 18-30. As one of Rotary International’s official youth programs, members of Rotaract clubs (known as Rotaractors), are part of the world’s largest service organization. Rotaractors perform service both locally and internationally, changing the world one person at a time!

For those of you who are still unsure about joining Cal Rotaract, here are some key points to remember as to why we’re different from every other community service club out there!

* Strong repertoire of international service!
* Rotarian support and professional development through resume building, interview practice, public speaking, event planning, and more!
* Direct participation through our committees.
* Member rewards and online service hour tracking!

Local Committee Scavenger Hunt
Fri. March 4 | 6:00 – 8:30PM | Sproul Fountain
Come out to compete in an awesome scavenger hunt in teams of 5-6, for the chance to win a set of GIFT CARDS to some great food spot near campus, and the ultimate glory of Scavenging Champion! We kindly request a $2 donation for your participation, which will be donated to the Berkeley YMCA! The Theme is HARRY POTTER!

Rotaract-Interact Stayover Outreach Program
Sat. March 5 to Sun. March 6 | Sat 1:00 – 5:00PM, and 7:00 – 11:00PM | UC Berkeley Campus
Come out to share your experiences with other prospective and admitted students, of the #1 Public University in the World! We will go through Tours, Q&A Panels, Activity time, and more! This is a great opportunity for those of you who LOVE Berkeley and would love to share your experience! Interactors (High school version of Rotaract) will be staying over and will hope to learn more about Berkeley in the duration of time that they’re here!

International Committee Charity Movie Night + LN-4 Prosthetic Hands Service Event
Thurs. March 10 | 7:00 – 10:00PM | Unit APR (TBA)
We’ll kick the night off with a fun mini service event at 7PM, in partnership with the LN-4 Prosthetic Hands Project! And at 8pm, we will be showing The Town, which has a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes! $3 suggested donation at the door, and FREE popcorn! All proceeds will go to non-profit Vitamin Angels to help combat malnutrition and improve the lives of children through vitamin supplementation.

Glow in the Dark Social

What do you get when you mix Refreshments + Glow Sticks + Music/Games into one 2 hour event? Cal Rotaract’s first ever Glow in the Dark Social! Whether you just want to meet new people or unleash your inner athlete as we play some team sports in fluorescent glory, be sure you don’t miss this opportunity!

Water Writes: Mural Painting Party in Oakland!
Sat. March 12 | Two Shifts: 10:00AM – 1:00PM and 1:00 – 4:00PM | Broadway & 21st St (Meet at Bancroft & Telegraph)

Come out and join the Estria Foundation in painting a 3000 sq ft. mural dedicated to water! The mural reflects local and global water issues and inspires a message of collective work to protect and preserve this precious resource. There will be free food and T-shirts for volunteers, prizes, music and games for the community! Come out and get your hands dirty, build community & consciousness!

III. Register for Relay for Life!

Sign up for Cal Rotaract’s Relay for Life team and join us in the fight against cancer! Relay for Life is a 24-hour event that fundraises money for cancer research, treatment, and advocacy.

Saturday, April 30 @ 10 am – Sunday, May 1 @ 10 am [Location TBA (in Berkeley)]

Help us reach our goals of fundraising $5000 and being the LARGEST team on campus! Even though early bird registration is over, you can STILL sign up for $10! Just visit our team page at:

IV. Register for Dance Marathon!

Dance Marathon (DM) is is an annual campus-wide event that brings students and the community together for a fun-filled night in the fight against Pediatric AIDS. The overnight event includes 12 consecutive hours of dancing, live entertainment, educational activities and speakers, themed activities, free food and exciting contests and prizes! It’s gonna be a blast!

WHEN: Fri. April 1st to Sat. April 2nd, 9PM – 9AM
WHERE: Pauley Ballroom, MLK Student Union
THEME: Dr. Seuss!

Your $15 Registration fee is all it takes to treat a pregnant mother and prevent transmission of HIV to her child, so just by registering you are saving a child’s life! The deadline to register is March 18th, but sign up ASAP to start raising money for some awesome raffle prizes!

**When you register, you have the option to either register as a regular Dancer, or a DM VIP. The difference is that DM VIP’s pledge to raise at least $50 and stay the whole night. If you think you can do that, register as VIP so you can get exclusive benefits at the event!**

V. Joining the Club/Club Fees

Our membership fees are:
– $22 for a year (T-shirt included!)
– $14 for a semester (T-shirt NOT included)

Even if you have already paid for this semester, we ask that members please fill out a new membership application (attached!) which will also be available at our table on Sproul Plaza. Please turn it in to us either at our general meetings or at our table (Mon-Thurs, 10AM – 2PM) with your dues.
