Rotaract Newsletter Spring 2014
Issue #2 February 12
Hello from Cal Rotaract!
Pictured above is a group of our officers all jazzed up for Family Night! We’re incredibly excited to welcome everyone to our new Rotaract families, which will be revealed at the general meeting *SALUTES* this Tuesday! The meeting’s theme of “Peace, Love, Rotaract!” demonstrates how the success of our club comes from the passion that our members have to do good around the world. We can’t wait to continue spreading our love for service as the semester progresses!
If you are receiving this email for the first time… Welcome to our mailing list! The Cal Rotaract newsletter is a bi-weekly publication that will provide information on upcoming service opportunities, exciting socials, and plenty of other Rotaract-related announcements!

It’s time to get LoCo for service! Join us this Thursday for the first Local Committee (LoCo) meeting of Spring 2014! This will be an info-packed meeting, so you don’t want to miss it! In addition to going over all of the semester’s major events *SALUTES* and committee projects, we’ll also be joined by two awesome guest speakers: Rotary International’s O’Neil Dillon and Soumil Amin. They’ll be talking with us about ongoing service initiatives, as well as the importance of service in everyday life. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to connect with two of East Bay’s most active philanthropists!
2/15: Garber Park Restoration
Garber Park via College & Durant 49 bus stop | 8:45AM-1PM | FB Event (https://www.facebook.com/events/457213017739036/)
Rotaract’s Local Committee (LoCo) hosts our first local service event of Spring 2014; let’s get LoCo as we help restore the natural beauty and gorgeous open spaces of Berkeley’s Garber Park. We’ll be pulling invasive weeds, performing trail maintenance, and planting native species as we get to know one another through service and community impact. Meet at the 49 stop at the Durant/College intersection at 8:45 AM sharp (not Berkeley time!). We’ll be taking the 9:01 bus to Ashby and walking the rest of the way. Bring your AC transit pass and comfortable shoes/clothes, and prepare for any type of weather. Service ends at noon and we’ll likely walk back to campus. Water and snacks will be provided!

(Wear red, white, and pink for the full effect!) We’ll have plenty of Valentine’s Day candy for you to enjoy while listening to our event updates and guest speakers! Plus, our officers have a special surprised planned… You won’t want to miss it!

Location TBA | 7-8:30PM | FB Event (https://www.facebook.com/events/273970339394180/)
Get ready for the first International service project of the semester! We all attend the world class school that is UC Berkeley, but the fact remains that many others around the world don’t have nearly the access to the resources that we do. At this event, Rotaracters will be building their very own electronic education materials (that’s PowerPoints, PDF’s, Word documents, video, audio, etc.). You can pick any subject you’d like: English, Science, Math, Geography, and more! After they are completed, we will send them to E-Luminate to be used by children in centers in Uganda, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. Food and refreshments will be provided. Don’t forget to bring your laptops!
2/21: Breakin’ the Ice (Skating Social!)
Oakland Ice Center via Dana & Durant 1R stop | 6:30-10PM | FB Event (https://www.facebook.com/events/248734615300413/)
How much does a Rotaractor weigh? … ENOUGH TO BREAK THE ICE! Rotaract will be having an Friday night ice skating social, and we’d love to have you there! Meet at the 1R stop on Dana and Durant at 6:25PM. Remember to bring your AC transit pass and $10 cash for ice skating and skate rentals! Please go to our FB event for more information!
