Fall 2019 Interns

Interns make up a large part of Cal Rotaract’s internal functions. They have worked countless hours to bring you promotional and marketing materials for club events and help increase efficiency of club operations. Whether it be the photos you get tagged in, the banners on Facebook, planning the behind the scenes of Benefit Show, or even parts of the newsletter, interns offer so much to our club, and we want to recognize them as part of this special edition of Humans of Cal Rotaract. These are some of their experiences.

Lauren Dela Rosa | Freshman

Major: Math with a Teaching Concentration

About Me:
If you ever want to talk about BTS or cats, I am the person to come to!

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

It went by fast but was enjoyable nonetheless! I loved having a firsthand view of all of the hard work that goes behind making this club run, while also having the opportunity to take a bit of a part in it myself.

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

Weekly check-ups. It was nice to get to know Kate, Ningxin, and Eric better. It felt like a break from work, even though we were working.

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

There’s a lot behind the scenes for stayover that I don’t think people realize Kate and Ningxin took care of. I just really want to thank them both for all of the countless hours they put into this. I know it may have been stressful at times, but it is work that has the opportunity of genuinely impacting these Interactor’s lives, so it’s important that it’s done well, and they both went above and beyond to ensure the best experience. Kate and Ningxin, thank you both for everything <3

Human Relations Interns

Ivy Lei | Freshman

Major: Intended BASW/Social Welfare

About Me:
My name is Ivy, I am a freshman with the intent of majoring in BASW/Social Welfare!! I am from the Bay Area and I love going to concerts, skating around in the middle of the night, and boba!!

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

It was honestly pretty fun!! I had a great time getting to know more about Shelley and Cedar, and I felt that we really bonded. I learned a lot of skills through being an HR intern that I definitely utilize in my day to day life. Everything was super manageable and communication was great.

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

It definitely has to be the time after we finished our HR/intern meeting, I decided to encourage (force*) Shelley to ride my longboard all the way from Eshleman to Barrows. Needless to say, it took us around half an hour to get to Barrows and I don’t think Shelley trusts me anymore. On the contrary, she did not fall so that technically means I am a fantastic teacher.

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

I learned that Human Resources is basically the backbone of the entire club. It is a position that deserves a lot more recognition and appreciation. With that being said, SHELLEY I LOVE YOU WITH MY WHOLE HEART!! <3

Cedar Casper | Junior

About Me:

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

I loved being an HR intern because I got to learn many real world skills that will be useful in the years to come. I got to interact with more members through my internship than I would have if I had been a general member. I am so glad I chose to be an intern for my first semester in Rotaract.

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

Texting my fellow HR intern about our assignments whenever I’d get confused (which happened VERY often)

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

I learned a lot about spreadsheets and google drive, which are two things I knew nothing about before becoming an intern.

Local Committee Intern

Calum McLaren | Junior

Major: MCB-Neurobiology

About Me:
Oh man. I’m a 20 year old biology major. I love to play the guitar and be active. I have met some of my closest friends through the Rotaract club and through rowing. The latter of which I did at Cal my freshman year. My favorite food is Paella my favorite movie is “The Shawshank Redemption” and the thing that makes me happiest is putting a smile on another person’s face. Whether it’s by baking for them, giving and a complement or by telling a funny joke. Any of those will do 🙂

How would you describe your overall experience as an intern this semester?

I think I had a great experience as an intern I would most definitely recommend the position to whoever is interested. My only regret is that I think I could have done more to help my officers.

What was your favorite memory/funniest moment during your internship experience?

I think a lot of my best memories came from working in Eschelman with Dharra, Jessica, and Marie. They’re all a bunch of hilarious kind and hard working people so any time to got the chance to meet with them it was a blast. If I have to get more specific I would say that Marie’s many existential crises due to a lack of sleep always got a belly laugh out of me. As mean as that is to say.

What did you learn about the specific office/position that you are interning for? Anything you would like to say to your officer?

I learned that it takes a lot of passion to be an officer. It might seem like a lot of work to organize all the committees and to organize all the events, and don’t get me wrong it totally is, but when you’re passionate about something like Dharra and Marie were everything just seems to flow into place. Even when there are hiccups they never last long. To my officers I say thank you. I feel so deeply privileged to have been able to work with you. I hope you believe me when I say that you both inspired me and that I really look up to you both as leaders and as great people. Thank you so much for an amazing semester.
