Science Policy Networking Event

Science Policy Networking Event 2010

Thursday, November 18th, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Helmholz Room - 375 LeConte

The Science Policy Networking Event is an opportunity for students, postdocs, and faculty interested in studying specific science policy issues to meet individuals in complementary disciplines.

The goal of this event is to establish groups of researchers that will ultimately present their work at conferences or publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals.

For example, it may be possible for chemical engineers researching Lithium batteries to work with policy makers studying humans rights issues surrounding Lithium mining in South America. Another possibility would be for scientists studying inexpensive malaria treatments to work with health policy experts to develop techniques for introducing the medication to impoverished communities.

Other possibilities include:

  • Development of strategies and technologies for a carbon free energy infrastructure
  • Politics of stem cell research
  • Funding for basic science
  • Nuclear disarmament and biosecurity
  • Technologies to help alleviate poverty
  • Privacy issues in personal genomics
  • And many more!

Possible forums for presenting your work are:

  • AAAS meeting
  • Student Pugwash at Stanford
  • UCS summer symposium
  • And STEP's own White Paper Competition

Examples of journals where you can publish science policy research:

  • Science and World Affairs
  • Issues in Science and Technology
  • Triple Helix
  • Biosecurity and Bioterrorism
  • Arms Control Today
  • editorial or policy sections of Nature and Science and other science journals

Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be available.
