The Great Nebula in Orion is just below and left of constellation Orion's three-star belt. It contains one of the closest stellar nurseries, lying at a distance of about 1500 light years. The red region consists of nebulae M42 and M43, and the bright Trapezium open cluster. The blue region is a nebula primarily reflecting the light from internal bright stars. Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope have detected solar-system sized star-forming regions. w.wu 2000-2005 |
