Hi. Where do you recommend that I download a copy of LaTeX? There are so many versions out there, I'm intimidated. I'd appreciate it if you can suggest one to me. I'm mainly going to be just typing up homework and notes.

For windows there's miktex. I think any linux has it in in its distribution. You could also try lyx, it's a graphical latex editor..

Ditto to what towr said. I use MikTeX, and I use the very handy WinEdt editor to write up the files. Just google for "WinEdt". I also recommend you check out xfig for making diagrams that can be included in your LaTeX files. You can run xfig on unix. If you don't want to change from Windows to Unix/Linux, you can do what I did and install cygwin. Xfig is great for easily drawing technical diagrams such as state machines, binary trees and flowcharts. I am a self-proclaimed LaTeX + xfig badass. I highly recommend you get a laptop, teach yourself LaTeX, and start typing your homework and lecture notes in real-time. You'll make everyone else's coursework look like a train wreck. It's also great for making amazing crib sheets.
