Hey, does the dark layout of this bulletin board annoy people?

I'm a fellow web designer, and I use black backgrounds about as much as I use white, or grey, or other such common colors. I have also heard a lot of people talk smack about black backgrounds, but as far as I'm concerned, they are simply conceited elitist webmongers. It's not the colors individually chosen for a website that define its appeal, but the color SCHEME. If the combination of colors form a pleasing palette, then they are just as good as any other palette. Black background with white text provides just as much contrast as white background with black text. In fact, I'd almost venture to say moreso. One could also argue it conserves energy. =)

Will,

I like the black background.  I think it makes things look classier in an intellectual sort of way.  I can't imagine it any other way!!

In the meantime, I'm exploring new parts of the site I hadn't seen before -- excellent job with all this, in addition to all the riddles!!!  I hadn't realized all the cool things that are around!!!

Best,
Eric

Thanks guys. And thanks for the kind words Eric. Yea, I put a lot of time into this website, but not just the riddles section. The content in the Chinese, Truth, or Psychology sections might actually be better. It would be cool if more people checked out the other sections, but I'm not going to strongly advertise it, becaues that might be annoying.

All the smart text editors use black backgrounds and white text (e.g. vi and emacs, sometimes requiring settings configuration). In contrast, Microsoft Word uses all white background, and black text. The whiteness stimulates your eye cones more than blackness, resulting in quicker fatigue.

I might experiment temporarily with other bulletin board layouts just to see what happens.

A black background is easy on the eyes. So it's very good when you spend a lot of time looking at it Wink

I'm sure William is well past any ideas of changing, but I want to add that this is without exception the best looking forum I have ever seen! I'm no design guru - my saying this looks good may not even be considered a compliment by those who know my tastes  Wink - but other forums I have seen range from blah! to okay. This one beats them all handily!

I second that Icarus, I've done the same, and this background beats all others. The rest are much harder to read.

I too would like to stand up and be counted in favor of the white on black page -- it's so comfy for an old man.

I should like to see a clearer line separating one post and the next, though.

I like the black layout here or actually the CSS format here.  I like how it flows and am looking for something similar.  I currently use PhpBB and can 'develop' sites, but when it comes to CSS or styles, i'm not an idiot' so to speak.  I haven't done my homework on CSS, but soon will Smiley

The other thing is that with newer browsers being developed every minute (or newer versions), it's hard to support everything.

Anyway, I like what you've done here and will look for it if that's possible.  I know it's possible  Wink

Speaking of CSS, it would be nice to have multiple style sheets. I don't know about IE, but Firefox allows one to switch between style sheets. I have seen this used before and it is a nice way to allow the user to customize a site's looks with little extra work on the web designer's part.

What is with the change in color scheme? I liked the black myself, but can deal with the change.

However, there are a lot of things I and others have done involving colors that now are unreadable, because they were intended for dark backgrounds, not these light ones.

Is this something permanent? If so, I've got a lot of work ahead repairing color schemes.

Hiya Icarus. I was just thinking the same thing about some of the pages you made while perusing the site under this scheme. I will change it back to black soon, so don't worry. I'm just using this to debug some CSS issues when viewing the forum on a unix machine.
