About my family

My parents, Sandy and April, live in Australia, as does my younger brother Cliff. My older brother Rex lives in the States. Here is a little bit about each of them. You can see more pictures in our Christmas 2004 photo album and our Christmas 2007 photo album.

Mom and Dad, Dec 2004

Mom and Dad (April and Sandy Kerr) are both writers. Dad is working on a book about the biological basis of moral philosophy, and Mom is working on a book about their experience with home schooling. Mom loves gardening and is a talented artist. Dad organises public astronomy nights, and volunteers in the fire brigade. They enjoy their beautiful house at Cape Hillsborough (except for the sandflies).

Rex (b. 1974) is a neurobiologist. He works on neural imaging, using fluorescent proteins to record the activity of individual neurons in real-time. (He studies C. elegans, a tiny transparent worm with 302 neurons.) Rex got his Ph.D. in Biology at UCSD and did his post-doc at the Salk Institute. He is now a Research Fellow at Janelia Farm in Virginia, where he invents new microscope technologies to record C. elegans neural activity and behavior. His non-research activities include tennis, hiking, piano, and the occasional video game (I never beat him at video games, and it's not very often that I beat him at Scrabble either).

Cliff (b. 1984) did his BSc in biophysics at the University of Queensland, and his Honours at the Brain Dynamics group at the University of Sydney. He wrote his thesis on a model of brain electrophysiology, and has stayed with the Brain Dynamics group to continue this work for his PhD. He is an accomplished pianist, singer, composer, and conductor, and recently finished a term as president of Sydney Uni's Madrigal Society. When not playing the piano, teaching physics lab, or making graphs of evoked potentials, he invents new recipes like caramelized Frankengnocchi with avocado cream sauce.

And here is a little bit about my extended family:

The
Kerr Family, January 2002

The Kerrs are of Scottish ancestry. Here (L to R) are Grandpa Clark, uncle Clark E., cousin Sevgi with son Justice, brother Cliff, father Sandy, (front row) myself, Grandma Kay, and cousin Lindsay. (Missing are aunt Carolee and cousins Tyler and Kimi.) Grandpa, who passed away in 2003, was a university educator whose job took him (and his family) around the world. Grandma co-founded Save The Bay. At 97 she's still going strong and I visit her weekly.

The Childs at the Solana Beach Torrey Pines memorial, summer 2003

The Childs, my mom's family, are Lithuanian. Both my grandmother Wenetta (2nd from L) and my grandad Al were born to Lithuanian immigrants in Chicago. Mom (R) and her sister Carol (L) grew up hearing their mother and grandmother speak Lithuanian in order to keep secrets from the girls! Grandad was an accountant and a tennis player, and Grandmother was a professional artist (specializing in enamels and watercolors). This plaque honors her work to beautify her hometown of Solana Beach.
