About the campaign

Home to the Department of Art Practice, Kroeber Hall is a building whose walls change as soon as new artwork is created. Taking a closer look at its art studios and bathrooms from a sustainability standpoint, one can easily see many places in need of improvement. Small changes like energy-saving stickers or water awareness signs can be easily implemented to help “green” Kroeber’s daily inhabitants but larger changes involving acquiring paper towel holders or recycling bins would result in a larger sustainability impact. Greening Kroeber is a design/marketing plan that involves temporary and permanent signage, publications materials, and possibly the purchase of recycling bins for Kroeber’s upcoming 2011-2012 school year. The campaign is funded by The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF).

The purpose of the project is to create public awareness about water, energy, paper towel usage, and toxics in art materials through stickers, signage, posters, newsletters, blogs, flyers, and other marketing tools. With a focus on online marketing, the campaign aims to not only raise awareness about sustainability (daily habits, purchasing choices, campus initiatives), but also to decrease the amount of waste generated and water and energy usages in Kroeber Hall.

Logistics of the Campaign

Photo of Mezzanine sinkEvery month, the campaign focuses on a different theme regarding sustainability. Each theme includes a large color poster, matching postcard, and sustainability board update. The print materials will be posted and distributed around Kroeber while the sustainability board update occurs on the Mezzanine Level.

MONTH THEME
August Campus Sustainability
September Purchasing Art Supplies
October Water
November Energy
Dec/Jan Purchasing & Reusing
February Waste
March Transportation
April Food & Dining
May Miscellaneous Sustainability

Auxiliary tasks of the campaign include creating permanent signage that educates people to reduce their consumption of water, energy, and resources. To decrease water usage, more save water signs and stickers will be posted to encourage turning off bathroom and art studio sinks. To decrease energy usage, more signs to turn off lights when not in use will be placed especially in the Art Locker Room, Art Storage Room, and art studios. To decrease the waste stream, signs to decrease liberal paper towel use will be placed. If necessary and possible, the campaign may include the installation of more recycle bins in the third floor art studios. Some innovative strategies like tying treats to bicycles parked in Kroeber Hall's bike rack, guerilla marketing techniques,  and sponsoring art, video, and writing contests will be implemented to reach a broader audience.

The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF)

The Green Initiative Fund is a grant-making fund for sustainability projects on UC Berkeley's campus. Originated at UC Santa Barbara and now at six of the ten UC campuses, TGIF receives about $250,000 per year to make available for grants; all students, faculty, and staff are eligible to submit project proposals. Projects are selected for funding by an annually appointed Grant Making Committee consisting of students, faculty, and staff, in which students have the majority vote.

TGIF is funded by a $5.50 per semester student fee which began in fall 2007 and will continue until 2017. The fee referendum was passed by the students during the April 2007 ASUC elections with 69% approval and received final approval by the Chancellor and Regents during summer 2007.

Website Art Style

This website has a grunge style, drawing design inspiration from Urban Outfitters. This style relates well to the campaign's target market- college students. However, the campaign also wants to reach Kroeber staff and faculty and community members who enter Kroeber Hall.

About the background image
Look at how plain the boards are! We can utilize one of the boards to be a monthly sustainability board! Also, to decrease waste, putting up a sign that says 1 flyer per announcement can reduce paper usage.
