Dry eyes

"Dry eye syndrome (" dry eye ") refers to a condition where there is a decline of the quantity of tears keeping the eye moist. Typically, patients suffering from dry eyes experience eye irritation or pain, although the dry eye effect may come and go. Many people with dry eyes also experience a sandy or gritty sensation that, if left untreated, can lead to scarring or ulceration of the cornea, and possible loss of vision" (healthlinkusa).

You heard it folks. Scarring or ulceration of the cornea, loss of vision… this stuff is just as ugly as it sounds. Eye problems are probably the most prevalent and detrimental side-effects of extended computer use. In fact, "nearly 9 out of every 10 computer users are affected by CVS (computer vision syndrome)," (Computers and Eye Strain). In order to avoid serious eye injury, limit computer use. If your job or schoolwork require you to be on the computer for prolonged periods of time, remember to blink frequently, take breaks, and, if necessary, use artificial tears to keep your eye moist. More information about dry eye syndrome can be found here. Marc Grossman of VisionWorks, Inc offers a free list of eye exercises, eye drop treatments, and dietary remedies to correct dry eyes, eye-strain, and other computer-induced eye problems. Finally, Kai Li of UC Berkeley has made an excellent website dedicated entirely to to computer vision syndrome.
