Methodology in Late Biblical Hebrew (with a Partial Index of Kutscher's A History of the Hebrew Language)

Scott Nikaido

E.Y. Kutscher's posthumous work on the history of the Hebrew language (1982) and A. Hurvitz's recent article on the identification of LBH elements (1995) are discussed in this short survey. The importance of recognizing the inseparability of synchronic and diachronic study when investigating ancient languages (Kutscher) and the concept of "linguistic contrast" (Hurvitz) as a criteria are discussed and evaluated. An index of Hebrew words to Kutscher's book is included which covers LBH material.
