The Jews in Asia Minor

Eric M. Orlin

This paper will first discuss the evidence for the arrival and presence of the Jews in Asia Minor and their position in the communities in which they lived. It will then focus on a few select cities which reveal critical information about how the Jews interacted with the pagan world around them. Both the Jewish Influence on the local inhabitants and the local influence on the Jews will be examined. Finally, an assessment will be made of the degree to which the Jews attempted to assimilate into the Greek culture and the degree to which they remained faithful to their tradition.
