Our old friend, that we haven't heard from in a while, the sadistic jailer, took all the prisoners into the courtyard, arranged them in a circle, and pointed at one of them and started counting; eenie, meenie, minie, moe... (and it wasn't the politically correct version, either). There are different versions; he used one that says "you are not IT" on beat 31. He then shot that prisoner and started again with the next man. If he started with 50 prisoners, which numbered prisoner would you want to be?

I haven't worked out all of the eening (is there a way to do it short of brute force?), but personally, I'd rather be number 51 .

of course there's a way to do it brute force.. just keep counting and shooting... Of course he doesn't seem to stop even if there is only one left, so I'd rather be 31 and get it over with first..

| Hm, this implies that the jailer is one of the numbered prisoners... In that case the previous posters might want to change their minds. As I don't know this English counting rhyme, I could try a German one and see if I get the same answer. But then again, German jailers aren't that inhuman (I hope), so it's of little practical use anyway. Oh, and a link to some politically incorrect version(s) would be highly appreciated.

The "politically correct" version that I hear children chant today is: Eenie meenie mienie moe, Catch a tiger by the toe. If he hollers, let him go. My mommy told me to choose this very one. Several years ago, it was closer to it's roots: Eenie meenie mienie moe. Catch a tiger by the toe. If he hollers, make him pay fifty dollars every day. My mommy told me to choose this very one. The version I learned as a child differed by just one word. Instead of promoting extortion of wildlife, It advocated extortion from those of another race. So as not to offend anyone, I will let you figure the word out yourself. In my defense, I was past the age of quoting this verse before I ever gave any thought to what it actually said!

Without the http:// on front, that link only gives me a CGIWrap Error. This works better:http://mathworld.wolfram.com/JosephusProblem.html
