Cryptic Anagrams
« on: Jan 6th, 2004, 4:24pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I'm not sure if this is the place for this, or if anyone else enjoys these as much as me. I thought it'd be good to have a thread devoted to anagrams, but with a bit of a twist.
(i) The given sentence contains an anagram made up of one or more complete words.
(ii) If the anagram spans more than one word, the words must be consecutive.
(iii) The complete sentence should give a clue to the unscrambled anagram.

For example,
You would find this at the end of the tramline.

tramline = terminal

If you can work it out, post the answer (hidden, so others can think about it), and then post a puzzle of your own.

I'll start the game of anagram tag...

The way the book ended was really rather fiendish.

It looks like you two double posted. Grin

Phew! They were hard. I don't think I made the rules very clear... I suggested that the anagram should be a single word, because unless you're really switched on to these then they're next to impossible if the anagram is made up of more than one word.

However, I certainly enjoy the challenge, so perhaps we could write next to the cryptic clue the number of words that the anagram is made of.

For example,
A rural concrete company got the contract for the new power plant. [2 words]
::a rural concrete = nuclear reactor::

It's not a cinema honor. [2 words]
::its not a cinema honor = the oscar nomination::

And you an Englishman, T&B, have you no honour?  Wink

I was afraid you'd mention that.

I once won a game of Scrabble with my last tile, while well behind, by playing an X on a triple-letter square to form two words, AX and AX. It was doubly - nay, triply - satisfying because I was playing an American.

Oh, I nearly forgot: prettiness(?)

Yes, there would be some satisfaction in that.  Smiley

I just realised that I can't count, there were 3 words in your anagram. Despite the misspelling, that was a very clever anagram; I am impressed.

I never spotted prettiness – nice one – but it wasn't the one I was thinking of and it doesn't quite fit all of the clue.

I'm struggling with both of these.  Cry

I've been trying throughout the day to get your anagram, T&B. So far...

I can get MOUNTAIN and SNOW out of COMPANY TWOS AN AUSTRIAN, leaving CPAY T A ASR. I can't figure out if I need to add the suffix, CAP or TOP to MOUNTAIN; the latter would require using CROWD. I don't know whether it's SNOW or SNOWY. However, whatever I try, I can't make anything from the remaining letters. Maybe I'm way off target? Can you give a clue?

Quetzycoatl, I wouldn't say that your other anagram was too easy, it's just that you eluded to the fact that our names were probably embedded somewhere. With that suspicion, it was clear where to look. However, it becomes increasingly difficult for humans to identify anagrams consisting of more than two words. I can't even begin to guess at the cryptic suggestion from your latest one. Judging by the unusual words, it is highly likely that the anagram makes use of the letters around, "Woe is me. sh*t" Apart from that, I'm currently at a loss, as I don't know which direction to go from there and I could be forming just about any word at all.

Hey Thud, your anagram isn't "an Austrian crowd" in German is it? We Americans can barely speak English, much less a second language you know. Anyway the closest I can come to an answer is:

:: threes company twos an = Topmost Aryan Wenches ::

Which may sound exciting but it doesn't really fit. Though it sort of makes sense with Austrian, and three of them would make nice company...

Sir Col, I understand 6 words is pretty tough, but there is an equally good clue in this one as there was in the last one.

If it is too much of a chore, here is a big clue:
:: the unscrammbled annagram is in there as well ::
