Is the standard formula for the integral of x^k really the best one? Chris Sangwin makes an interesting case that it is not.

Exercise:
 
Write 1/x = (1/x^3) * x^2  
 
Integrate the right hand side by parts. Explain why this, and any similar method, fails to find the integral of 1/x
