Death on the Train
« on: Mar 30th, 2005, 6:06pm »

A man stepped out of a train to his death.  He had been on his own in the compartment, and all that was there was a black handkerchief.  If he had been travelling by any other mode of transportation he most certainly would not have died.  What happened?

I'm not sure what the black handkerchief was for then.
And I can think up one other mode of transportation that would probably have been the death of him in the same way. (Not that it's used much these days)

An eye operation. The train went through a tunnel so he thought he was blind again. And in the riddle I knew he then proceeded to kill himself in despair.

Exactly the answer, towr, TheGodfather234 was looking for.  The black handkerchief was tocover his eyes after the operation.  The man wanted to know if he could see, so he took it off and set it down on the train.  When all he saw was darkness, he committed suicide by jumping off the train.

This is a case where he could have lit a match, to check if the light is off.

Well, before trains, in Britain for example, they used boats, going through canals. And those canals, in the hilly countryside, would also go through tunnels. So you'd have the same problem.
(Although it could be they weren't much used for transportation of people, and only of goods. I'm not that well informed about pre- and early industrial Britain, and around here we have lots of canals but no hills)
