And then John took a chainsaw (with a jigsaw it would take a little bit longer) and demolished Mark's nice wooden floor, loosing a friendship but getting his money...

And what about deconstructing the floor with a screwdriver (or a kitchen knife?) and a lot of patience?

Before leaving the room, have a cigarette.  Accidentally drop it on the couch.  leave the room.

Not bad, but the cigarette would touch the couch, and that also is not permitted.

After delivery, tell the movers they put it in the wrong appartment.  Ask them to move it up 10 floors to your own appartment.  The elevator is out of order due to another of Mark's chalenges that Alien will tell us one of these days.

Or

Do nothing.  Earth's natural rotation arount its axis and around the sun does the job.

Or

Make use of the power of the four elements: water, earth, air and fire:   Wait for a flood, an earthquake, a hurricane or a forest fire.  Especially effective in California.

You know, you are actually closer to the answer with this one than you think.

No. Geography is not important here.

To solve this puzzle, you will need to check your assumption about when.

Either
wait for the building to crumble from age
or
put the couch in a stupid position, blocking the entry and wait for Mark to push the couch when he enters.

John should propose a solution that works in just a few days, not years.  Wink

No because John alone should try to accomplish this, not Mark.  Tongue

You have practically solved the riddle with this answer, but you have to be more specific and provide all relevant details before I can say that you are right or not.  Wink

I don't think this is right, but it's been in my head a few days and I gotta get it out of there.

He sets up a magnifying glass such that when the sun reaches a certain position in the sky it will start a fire underneath the couch (aided by an accelerant). When the floor burns through the couch will fall.

If John is "big", and the apartment is not solidly built, then he could jump up and down to vibrate the floor and cause the couch to move.

John gets the person living under him angry somehow and the person gits the roof of his apartment to make John shut up and the vibrations make the couch move. This might work better at night when the guy under is grumpier and hits the roof with something heavier Grin

Well, a flood has been tried by Padzok (1st reply).  A fire has been tried by me (cigarette) and ChunkTug (mgnifying glass).  An earthquake has been tried by jumping up and down and considering microscopic movements.  A hurricane?  How can you do that?

Maybe he can put the couch in a very unstable position so that it can be blown over?

Another idea:

- attach rope to couch
- attach other end somewhere inside the elevator
- go down to the ground floor

So, according to you, those have been tried and should be put aside... or should they?   Wink

OK...
Fire: burn the couch.
Air: balance the couch in a very instable position, then sneeze at it.
