Since my world history is not that good, and its even worse when it comes to america, I'm just gonna go with the stab in the dark method.

Did it happen near a railway track ?

It was an old ladies army.  They came to rescue the hotel that was about to be taken by the opposite side.

Is Tom a generic name, or are you referring to a specific Tom during the Civil War?

Does Tom know these ladies?
Does Tom ever see the ladies?
Is Tom spared death because he reacted to the ladies crossing the street or is it more indirect?
Is there a window in the room?

Was it the wild west?
Maybe the old ladies blocked the line of fire for the gunmen who had planned on shooting Tom?

Can you reveal anything about how Tom avoided death? i.e., Did he escape the hotel? Was/were the potential killer(s) killed/stopped/delayed?

...Was Tom aware that someone wanted him dead?

I'd say he strongly suspected it for a short period of time.  Wink

were the old ladies Tom's hired killers? When they crossed the road they got run over by horse and carriage thus saving Tom.

Or

The carriage carried the hired killers. When they accidentally ran over the two old ladies, the commotion drew Tom to his window so Tom was able to shoot them from his hotel room.

How would Tom have suspected the killers in this scenario?  Undecided

If Tom never sees the ladies get run over, how would he have ever felt threatened about his life?

EDIT: BTW, Iceman you never answered if there was a window in Tom's room.

I have a lot of questions, obviously up to you if you want to answer them.

This may be a bit out there, but... is Tom human?

Was Tom the only one who was wanted by the killers, or who would have been killed by the killers?

Was he marked out by the killers individually? That is, did the killers have the task of killing him, specifically, in mind?

Maybe it was dirty, and the killers in the carriage, or the horses, were terribly blinded by the sight of old ladies' ankles and there was shrieking involved, and Tom assumed that it was about him; meanwhile, in all the commotion of wild horses, the killers accidentally kill themselves (because guns r bad) and thus Tom is safe.  Sad

Unfortunately for Tom, only he has such role in this riddle. But luckily for him, he is not slow.  Wink

They all knew in which room he is.
