If Tom was succesfully killed, how would he be killed ? Shot, knifed, poisoned ? Or maybe hanged to death ?

Does Tom know or otherwise have any relationship with the person/people that want(s) him dead? Is Tom/Would Tom have been engaged in a draw? (i.e. Take 10 steps back, turn around, etc.), like one of those old Westen movies

Were the killers themselves shot? If the killers were not killed, would Tom have seen them before he died? Would the killers have entered the room? Is Tom alone in the room?

Tom has stolen large amounts of money from someone. The killers have been told where he is. They enter the room to find Tom there. Old women cross the street making loud noises. The killers turn towards the window reflexively. Tom whips out his pistol and shoots the killers a la Lonesome Dove, Robert Duvall, etc..

ok here's another shot at it... pun intended ... Tom is getting ready in his hotel room. The guys who want to kill him enter his room. Meanwhile there are some old ladies crossing the street. Because it is 19th century people are courteous on the road and stop for them. Incidentally there is a carriage waiting on the road right beneath Tom's window that has a lot of grass in it that it is transporting. Tom takes the opportunity and jumps from the window onto the carriage and escapes the gunmen.

| 1) Tom doesn't leave the room. 2) Tom never looks out the window. 3) Tom never sees the women. 4) The gunmen must, at some point, die.

| Oh sorry were these the conclusions reached? The discussion was too long so didn't bother to read everything. But you would agree this sounds plausible doesn't it?

The women crossing the street cause a fuss, and the carriage that is going down the street flips out and guns are shot. The killers are already on their way up and think that Tom is shooting, so they are scared. Tom thinks the killers are about and goes to see if he can kill them. Because Tom is the better shooter, he wins the duel. Yarrrrrrr. This puzzle is irritating me. I don't even know what else I can ask.

Did the ladies crossing the street notice the gunmen and make a commotion, and Tom overheard, and was therefore prepared for the arrival of the hitman (or hitmen), and because of his preparedness and skill with a gun, was able to kill the hitman/men?

Were the gunmen already in the hotel when the old ladies crossed the street? Did Tom kill the gunmen? Did the gunmen kill themselves? Did the old ladies kill the gunmen?
