If they were conjoined twins which were separated, they would have have scars which would be on opposite sides of their bodies. However, this would invalidate the statement that "they look identical in all respects."

No to both. I had something else in mind. I think that the best thing to do is to forget about my clumsy hint because it may put you on the wrong track.

The twins were mischievous. So Elizabeth had tied them up together before going out. They were sitting in the same place when she came back.

They are mischievous but stupid. They always switch places when she leaves them for a while.

but not so stupid to forget when they last switched, I take it... I thought the dogs take on it was the best answer so far. Perhaps one has eaten soemthing that affects their gut...

They "looked identical in all respects". But not in all disrespects. Just trying to keep the ball rolling.

One of them knew Elizabeth had murdered their father. The other was just happy to see their mother again. Sorry about the scary fantasy.

Please don't tell me that they're attached to her chest. I might have to lose respect for this forum.

Whenever they sat together doing nothing one of them always sat on the right and the other always on the left.

Both of them were paralyzed and could not move without support. Before going out, Elizabeth had made them sit on the couch. When she came back, they were sitting in exactly the same position, obviously.

| This sort of answer also works using glue, which is a bit more temporary than paralysis...

| Above answer is pretty good but this time I’ll accept only the one I had in mind. Twins Elizabeth has identical twins, Debby and Jenny, who are in topnotch health. Sometimes they play with their identities, making it difficult for others to tell them apart. One day they wore the same clothes and looked identical in all respects. When Elizabeth returned from the store that day and saw her twin girls, she knew right away who was who. They were sitting quietly on the couch doing nothing. Nobody else was in the house at the time. How did she know?

If identical has greater meaning for you then Debby and Jenny were wearing identical clothes.

To me same is same in identity. Identical is exactly alike. So the same clothes would mean they are both squeezing inside one set of clothes.

She saw her twins on a picture. (and this is not in Harry Potter movie). Or she kicks twin #1's cat and it runs towards its owner. Or the twins are truly identical and exchangeable as 2 electrons are. It doesn't matter who is who. They are both called Tim anyway. Or she never bothered giving them names. Only on her way back from the shop she decided to give them names. At that moment (and never again) she knew exactly who is who.
