Join the staff

Two ways in.

  1. Write for the journal

The staff is made up of students enrolled in the Science Journalism DeCal, which runs each semester. Writers, interviewers, research editors, copy editors, and designers all join this way.

  2. Submit your research

Reviewed by faculty before publication. The steps and this semester's deadline of Monday, October 12 are below.

Undergraduate research submissions

What we accept, and how to prepare it.

Berkeley Scientific Journal publishes materials only by UC Berkeley undergraduates, or recent BA/BS recipients from UC Berkeley within one year of graduation.

Fall 2026 deadline: Monday, October 12. Both the eligibility form and your PI's signed release agreement need to be in by then.

How to submit

  1. Check your paper against the requirements

Make sure your manuscript matches the manuscript requirements before you start. Examples are provided on eScholarship under the Research heading.

  2. Complete the eligibility form

Fill in the research submission eligibility form.

  3. Have your PI sign the release agreement

Send the PI release agreement to the faculty member who oversaw your research and have them sign it, scan it, and email it to bsj.berkeley@gmail.com.

Questions about any of this go to bsj.berkeley@gmail.com.
