Our 'give-a-fucks' are on vacation

So what's with this year's flippant title? It just might be recognition of critical survival mechanism to retain a semblance of sanity, considering that this year alone, we've lived through a flooded flat, moving out of the said flat, moving back in to the flat, pre-election polling anxieties, the trauma resulting re-election of a dangerous fascist, temporary flatmate discomforts, and days later, the untimely death of an ex, whom one still feels something for. No regrets we reckon, but so much left unresolved, and now, no chance ever to resolve them. Annus horribilis indeed.

We had experienced Brazilian winter, as suggested by these images, but we also lived through the still ongoing Brat Summer, the Eras of Swifties, the Cowboy Carter rodeo, and the ubiquitous That’s-me Espresso. However, all things considered, it just may possibly be yet another Year of Posty. Leaning into his Nashville crossover makeover, Posty appears no less than five times (!) on this year’s survey, which may be our twangiest ever. Even Beyoncé, of all people, joined this year’s hoe-down festivities, which includes survey debuts by HARDY, Zach Bryan, Blake Shelton, Charles Wesley Godwin, and Orville Peck. They’re joined here by longtime survey veterans by the likes of 'Johnny Blue Skies' Sturgill, the recently gone-country 'Thomas Wesley' Diplo, real cowpoke Colter Wall, Jason Isbell, Red Shahan, and the perennial favourite Nashville Canadian songwriter Donovan Woods. Appearing for another consecutive year here, Kylie continues her late-career renaisance with two tracks, one of which is the campy post-country and western collaboration with Orville Peck and overextended Diplo. Almost 40% of this year's compliation, or about sixteen of this year's selections, can be classified as some form of American country-western-roots-folk music.

Since Joe Diffie passed away during the pandemic in 2021, we never had the chance to include him here on these surveys. Fortunately, we managed to rectify this by bringing in what happens to be our favourite Diffie tune, courtesy of HARDY, Posty, and Morgan Wallen again.

Fleetwood Mac have somehow returned to our collective cultural zeitgeist again, and not because of the continuing, decades-long drama between Buckingham and Nicks, nor is it due to the latter's active participation in the fight for women's rights and democracy in this year's American presidential election campaign. No doubt that their music is perennial and still resonating with today's generation. Posty, who once cited that he sings with Nicks's quivering vibrato-like inflection, pays homage to her with his version of her anthemic 'Dreams.' And speaking of this year's election campaign, the survey welcomes back another one of its high-profile participants in the form of Justin Vernon. We've got a few other veterans returing this year, such as Calvin Harris, Mike Skinner, Sleaford Mods, and the Pet Shop Boys. What feels like another throwback is Kesha's new track, which sounds like she's bringing back some of the old 'Ke$ha' attitude and skanky vibes, after years of well-publicised ordeals. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

So we end this year’s compilation with something incongruous, since it was recorded back in 1969 by Fairport Convention, and written by Richard Thompson (who’s not stranger to these surveys), and performed by the late, great Sandy Denny. Even though she passed away in 1976, her power still haunts us with performances like this. The technical reason for her presence tis year is her song closes the Netflix series Baby Reindeer, which aptly reflects a facet of our current collective zeitgeist of abuse, and our inability to deal with trauma, and how we sometimes go back to our abusers for more.

The images shown here were taken in September 2024 in Anhangabaú station of the Metrô de São Paulo during our aforementioned Brazilian winter. Feliz Natal.
