Graduate Medievalists at Berkeley (GMB or as we like to pronounce it, Gumbee) was launched in 1993 by graduate students committed to community. Anyone who studies the premodern understands that it is absolutely impossible to learn everything on your own. It is often in our intellectual exchanges with peers across disciplines that we learn the most. It is the goal of GMB to provide students an opportunity to expand their intellectual community past the formal restrictions of their own discipline and to build a dynamic social and intellectual network across the university campus.
