One of nine campuses of the University of California, UCSF is a world- class health and biomedical sciences campus for graduate and professional students only. It includes four professional schools, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry, that host a variety of graduate programs in basic sciences. The graduate program in Bioinformatics is located on the new Mission Bay campus, near the San Francisco waterfront, an easy walk from San Francisco’s new ballpark and Embarcadero. Three research buildings, new housing for students, postdocs and junior faculty as well as a spectacular student recreation and fitness center equipped with basketball courts and two swimming pools (one on the roof) have transformed the southeast quadrant of San Francisco into a dynamic neighborhood. A new cancer center is on the drawing board. San Francisco is rich in cultural and ethnic diversity, with excellent museums, theaters, musical offerings and outstanding restaurants. California's famous wine country and skiing and camping in the Sierra Nevada are within easy reach. Sailing and windsurfing on the San Francisco Bay are appealing pastimes. Especially interesting to bioinformatics students, a new Institute devoted to expansion in Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3) houses 17 established faculty at Mission Bay opened in 2004, with an additional 15 faculty recruitments underway.
