Enlightenment through Mudhoney

HOWDY MUDD CLUBB FOLKS:

I was over at our friend (also our manager and holder of the key to P.O. Box) Bob's house the other day and noticed a grocery sack full of mail. When I asked him what it was he replied, "unanswered letters to the Mudd Clubb, dipshit." O couldn't get to sleep that night due to the guilt I felt knowing that those letters, your letters, were just sitting there gathering dust. Some of them were sent to us as far back as April '95 for christsakes!

Well, I'm not sure exactly what a "fan club" is supposed to do, but I do know that mail should be answered. So I spent the last couple of days reading through the letters to get an idea of what you wanted to know. Hopefully, you won't be too offended that you're getting a form letter, but god knows we're lazy S.O.B.'s. (As if that's some kind of excuse.)

So you want to know what's happening with MUDHONEY? The answer is: "not much." Last summer Steve told the rest of us that he didn't want to tour anymore, at least not for awhile. We all got kinda bummed-out. So, now we're taking some time off. Those of you who have been with us for awhile might recall a similar thing happening around the time of Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge when Steve decided to go back to school.

This situation has actually been great for me because it has freed me up to spend more time with BLOODLOSS. Our album Live My Way recently came out on Reprise (CD & cassette) so you should be able to find it at almost any CD store. (If they don't have it in stock, don't be afraid to ask them to order it for you.) If you're looking for the vinyl version, you can order it from IN THE RED RECORDS, 2627 E Strong Pl., Anaheim, CA 92806 for $8.00 including postage. IN THE RED also has cool stuff by the Blues Explosion, Cheater Sticks, the Bassholes and others. Write to them for a bitchin' catalog.

Bloodloss is going on a US tour starting the 12th of April. We hope to see YOU soon.

Steve is putting out cool bands on his label. Check out the SUPER ELECTRO SOUND RECORDINGS section in this mailing. If you order something from Steve, ask him when we're going to tour next.

Dan has been playing and recording with Love Battery lately. In June he's going to tour with Mike Johnson of Dinosaur Jr. But for the most part he says he's content just kickin' back and chillin'.

Matt seems most content when he's hanging around his house with his lovely bride Manon (who just graduated from massage school with an A+ average) and their pup Sheeba while he works on model airplanes (must be the glue).

MUDHONEY recently released a compilation of Videos entitled No. 1 Video in America This Week. It features 13 fine videos that no one else seems to like. It's out through the Time/Warner Corporation so it should be fairly easy to track down.

Speaking of compilations, we are also compiling all the good rare songs (mostly B-sides, sound track cuts, covers & some unreleased stuff) for an album. We don't know what it will be called, but it will be out sometime in '96. It will feature stuff dating back to the song Twenty Four (which is the first song we ever released and can only be found on the out-of-print Dope, Guns, and Fucking in the Streets Vol. 1 compilation) all the way to the near present, like the kick-ass unreleased version of Roxy Music's Editions of You we recorded for the BBC in May of '95 as well as Poisoned Water Poisons the Mind which we recorded for the film Black Sheep in September of '95.

If you go see Black Sheep, and don't walk out like Gene Siskel, you might just notice that we're playing "live" in it. We all got to say a line even. It's good for a couple of yuks, I think it helps if you're baked though.

If you're interested in getting a comic with Matt Lukin's bare butt in it, you might want to consider getting a copy of "Ew, That's Gross!" Send $1.00 to Beth Johnson 1644 Monroe St. NW, Washington DC 20010.

Congratulations to Joyce Ide and Shad Spencer of Redding CA. They got married on the 13th of May 1995 and invited us to come down for the festivities. Unfortunately, we didn't open the letter until just recently.

Young Tom Smith is worried because his mom is going to marry "this 53 year old asshole when she's only 33...it's a sham, she likes your music too." Wow. Since I just turned 34 I guess I'm in the right age bracket for Ms. Smith, but Tom I gotta break it to ya, I'm already hitched.

Speaking of weird family stuff, Amy Phillip-Wulf insists that Mudhoney is the only band that appeals to her entire family, including her 70 year old grandmother. Hey Amy, try playing Bloodloss for grandma to see if she's a true fan.

A couple of folks have been asking for tablature or sheet music for the songs. None of us know anything about that kind of stuff. There is an Unofficial Mudhoney Homepage on the internet run by Darren Cloutier (cloutiers@top.monad.net) that seems to offer this kind of info. Maybe you should give that a whirl.

Some of you are also asking for Lyrics. Hey, if I wanted you to read a poem, we would have printed them in the CD booklet. The thing is, poetry gives me the willies. Lyrics should be heard in the context of the music, if they're heard at all.

Oh yeah, some chump wrote in to express his disapproval to the lyrics for FDK claiming they're too political for him. Look guy, don't tell me what to sing, and I won't tell you what stupid slogan to yell next time you're picketing Planned Parenthood.

Speaking of Planned Parenthood, we are on a live

compilation CD of all Seattle bands. The whole thing was recorded live at the Crocodile Cafe and it's called Bite Back. All of the proceeds go to the Northwest AIDS Foundation and Planned Parenthood of Seattle - King County. It's a diverse collection of 18 of the best Pacific Northwest bands.

You can get yours for $13.00 (postage paid) from POPLLAMA PRODUCTS, P.O. Box 95364, Seattle WA 98145-2364.

Well, I hope this info helps you out. Thanks for writing. Keep those cards and letters coming. We'll see ya sometime out on that lonesome road.

Love,
Mark Arm

[drawing of Mark] Great portrait by Mudhoney fan Lars. When are you going to do the rest of the band?

MONKEYWRENCH NEWS
Back in 1991 Steve Turner and Mark Arm got together with Martin Bland (Bloodloss), Tom Price (Gas Huffer, U-Men), and Time Kerr (Lord High Fixers, Jack O' Fire, Poison 13, Big Boys, etc.) as THE MONKEYWRENCH to record the seminal punk/blues LP Clean as a Broke-Dick Dog.

Some folks are complaining that they can't find this album. Even though it's not out of print, it's out of distribution (don't ask us to explain Sub Pop's logic). If you want to get this great recording, you have to order it directly through Sub Pop by calling: 1(800)SUB-POP1 or writing to: Sub Pop, 1932 1st Ave Suite 1103, Seattle, Wa, 98101 or via the internet at: www.subpop.com The CD (catalog # 1029-2) costs $10.00 and the Cassette (catalog # 0129-4) will set you back $7.00.

GREEN RIVER NEWS
Since Green River broke up in 1987, there is no Green River news. As far as we Mudd Clubb folks know, there is no Green River merchandise either.

Mark and Steve did join Jeff and Stone for a Pearl Jam encore in 1993 at Las Vegas. Green River reformed (without Alex) long enough to play Swallow My Pride and a cover of the Dead Boys classic Ain't Nothin' To Do.

One of these songs is included on a Pearl Jam Fan Club give-away single.

Even their fan club is better than ours.

Wally says that Bloodloss is a delightful musical experience, on the same level as, uh...Mudhoney. Catch Mark, Guy, Ren and Martin on this tour if you can...

Young Bloodloss fan Adam shows us the mind expanding experience he had while listening to one of their records.

Even younger Bloodloss fan Ethan had a different response - he needed some alone time.

Everyone seems to have different responses to Bloodloss - catch 'em on this tour and find out what happens to you!
