Volunteering at Ace Monster Toys

I have been volunteering at Ace Monster Toys, a makerspace in Oakland, for nearly 2 years. Volunteering there has allowed me to develop my skills, both creative and interpersonal. I recently participated in the budgeting process at AMT, which was a collaborative effort with other members of the makerspace where we determined the resources available to the makerspace and how to allocate them fairly to different departments. Although I had no prior experience in budgeting for a large organization, I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from my peers and develop new skills. Participating in this budgeting process allowed me to volunteer my free time to improve a place that I deeply care about and to make the space function better for all users, not just myself. I advocated for the prioritization of scholarships that allow low-income people to join the makerspace. When the budgeting process spilled over into an additional day of meetings, I rearranged my schedule so I could attend them. I wanted to see the process through and ensure that resources were allocated fairly to all the users of the makerspace.
