Committees

Events Committee

Our focus is on planning events and socials for TMSCA. In the past we have hosted the largest annual undergraduate-directed Stem Cell Conference, which includes poster presentations and speakers/faculty/researchers from UCSF, UC Berkeley, etc. Currently, we are working on reaching out to notable faculty at Cal in addition to local/nonlocal high schools to help introduce early interest in stem cell research-focused careers.

Outreach Committee

We are responsible for educating the public about stem cells and their applications in various fields of research, and providing insight on ethical questions on stem cell usage. We also direct our Stem Cell Education and Outreach Program (SCEOP) which trains our members in teaching high school students the basic principles of stem cell biology and introducing them to current research. In previous years, we have presented at local high schools, campus-wide education events such as Cal Day, Splash, and the Bay Area Science Festival. The current emphasis on remote learning provides us the unique opportunity to expand our scope of teaching beyond the limitations of travel distance.

Academia Committee

The goal of the academia committee is to help TMSCA members gain familiarity with the current state of research in translational medicine and stem cell applications. We review recent major literature, learn common terminology, and identify the current main challenges of scientists in regenerative medicine. We also review relevant content pulled from a variety of courses at Berkeley and the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine to help bridge members' knowledge from lower-division coursework to the baseline expected for most research positions. In addition to creating a basis for members in their search of research, we support professional development through the creation of club resource databases.
