Positive Aspects

  • Talking to people who cannot be physically reached
  • Timing
  • Meet new people and keep in touch with friends

Many people have friends and family who are physically distant. The Internet provides an easily accessible mode to communicate with people who are far away. Many cannot afford to or simply do not have time to travel long distances to meet relatives and companions. Online communication provides a simple solution to the distance problem.

Timing is also important in communication. Many cannot arrange common times to meet or chat over the telephone because of work or altering time zones. Email or a network such as Facebook allows users to leave messages when convenient and receivers to respond when possible. In this way, people with different time zones and busy schedules can still communicate.

Social networks such as Facebook and MySpace allow people to meet each other over the Internet. This can be useful for people who have just relocated to a new home or to a college. Networks online are also convenient for keeping in touch and socializing with a great number of people. For these reasons, many college students use online networks to socialize.
