This year’s compilation features strong showing from several legendary veteran acts, including (for the first time since we’ve been assembling these mix tapes, CDs, and now digital packages) Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hynde, and Aphex Twin’s survey debut. At the same time, this mix is also unusually well represented by slutty young ladies like Miley, Britney, Ke$ha (who has put in an appearance here every year since 2010), and (debuting here with a big bang) Iggy Azalea. It’s also nice to acknowledge that the pace of musical evolution in the pop landscape has picked up again; dubstep came and went, replaced by bloody knows what...folk music?

Well, yes... thanks to the Coen brothers mostly. Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood are here this year due to their mesmerising appearance in Park Chan-wook's Stoker. Finally, this mix also has one of the longest running time (2 hours, 30 minutes) we’ve ever presented (2013's being the longest so far), partly due to fact that, unusually for these surveys, eight tracks each has a running time over 4 minutes, 30 seconds. Due to the constraints of a physical CD, the multiple inclusion of these types of tracks back then simply would not have happened.

The cover images for this year were surreptitiously taken at Dia:Beacon in 2009. The featured artwork is by Blinky Palermo. Martina Navratilova.. champagne supernova...

For your convenience again this year, a m3u playlist file as been included in the zip package to ensure easy proper sequencing for the mp3 tracks:
