"rotten eggs"

I was out at lunch with a couple of friends and they were asking how I felt about people hitting on my sister and what I think of my sister's taste in guys. The question was brought up because one of them found it to be a bit of a problem when her older brother seems to want to beat the crap out of all her boyfriends. The other girl was the elder, so she never had that problem.

For a while, I found it amusing that my sister would introduce some new guy to me when he picks her up to go out. I'd walk up with a stoic look, shake his hands and say a simple "hi." I later found out that my sister found it amusing to see them something frightened to not know what I was thinking. If she did that now, I wonder what kind of reaction would some guy have to seeing me with a large scar on my forehead....

Anyhow, I made the statement that, for some reason, it seems that my little sister's long term guy friends seem much more nicer and cooler than my sister's boyfriends. "Funny you should say that, I was wondering the same thing!" When a girl agrees with me on that, I thought to myself maybe... just maybe... I should consider trying to pick up girls by being an total asshole.

(The title is a part of the conversation that lead and followed this conversation. Don't bother guessing what that has to do with this.)

Happy Birthday, EJ!

My birthday buddy EurJean turned 24 today! Happy Birthday! If it wern't for you eating dinner with family, I might have had a chance to get revenge for contributing to me drinking so much yesterday :P j/k

Wow, I've known EJ for a hecka long time! She's cool because, among other reasons, she has the same last name and car as me :) Back in high school, our friends once got both of us to plan each other's bday parties without the other knowing. Anyhow, next time we're out partying, I owe you a drink or three >:D

Apple MacWorld Rumors

Because I work for a subsidiary of Apple and happen to own a decent number of Apple products, every year when MacWorld comes around, my friends ask me about what's about to be announced. And as usual, I have no idea whatsoever. But I give some pretty good reasons to shoot down specific other rumors that sites are posting based on what I think can happen.

With the big expectation this year about Intel Macs, there seems to be much less of "what do you think is coming out" and more of "which mac do you think will get replaced first" and "should I wait and buy it?"

Well folks, it's about time I do a little rumor speculation of my own.

To answer the quick questions:
1) Wait and see what comes out. I have no idea.
2) If you buy the new Intel based mac, be warned that first generation designs often times suck and have bugs. Buy it if you want to be cutting edge. Don't buy it if you want time-tested tech.
3) iMacs/iBooks/Minis are getting iNtel first.
4) No they will not be run everything faster than the Power Mac and Powerbook.

Now, what do I think is could be getting announced? In order of probability:
1) Highest probability is a iBook using a Intel chip. It won't be bigger than 14 inches for a display. It won't be super high resolution.
2) More TV shows make it onto the music store.
3) iLife 06 will feature neat integration features and updates as usual.
4) Xserves go dual core.
5) Apple buys Motorola's Cellular division and merges it in with the iPod group.
6) Apple buys Palm and merges it in with the iPod group.
7) Apple buys Cingular and merges it in with the iPod group.
8) Apple revives the Newton group and merges it in with the iPod group.
9) Apple teams up with Sony to produce the ultimate Camera/MP3/PDA-phone.
10) "Oh, and one more thing, that Intel shift was just to get you all to use Xcode. We're not really going to switch everything to Intel. Surprise! And we now bring you quad core G6s Powerbooks. From some russian dudes who happen to just jump into the PPC market....yesterday."
11) A two button mouse is released. With two real buttons located where every other mouse has them.
12) An iPod with bluetooth earphones and wifi.

Toilets

Being assigned to take care of this for my parents, I feel like I'm almost a homeowner.

Okay, now that the dishwasher, range, and fridge have been replaced, it's time to tackle the other household problem: plumbing. Namely, toilet and sink.

The sink faucets upstairs and downstairs actually work pretty well, but the one in the kitchen leaks seasonally. We've dealt with that by having a run off bucket sitting there that it used for watering plants. So far so good. Not exactly a priority, but why not look around anyways?

On the other hand, all three toilets in the house have problems.
1) Downstairs. If left unattended the valve will sometimes not close and keep draining water. It also doesn't flush very well.
2) Upstairs shared. The chain keeps coming apart and the valve is messed up. For some reason, and it could be that I don't understand how this thing's supposed to work, the valve appears to drain most of the water out the overflow and only a little into the reservoir. It's kinda backwards. So I hacked it so that it drains everything into the main tank and lets the overflow drain take care of that, but it still has problems with the shutoff. Per flush, it takes like a half hour to fill the reservior. It's noisy and just really lame. And if we turn off the water intake, it seems to leak all over the floor.
3) Upstairs MBR. This one leaks onto the floor when the water line is on. And it clogs on practically anything. Snicker all you want, Roger. This one will probably clog if you piss on it.

Anyhow, if you look up the wikipedia entry, there's a picture of a sink on top of a toilet water reservoir. I want one of those. Problem is, I can't find the name of it. All I know is that American toilet companies are too stupid to come up with good ideas like this, and that Toto has two of these. (Z Series, and PureRest) But googling for a Toto US distributor that carries these doesn't seem to be working.

What I did find was the Toto Neorest, the Lamborgini of toilets. It does the Japanese/European thing of spraying your butt. But it also drys it with a warm air jet, built in deoderizer, has heated seats, flushes by itself, has the controls on a wall mount LCD panel, and lifts either just the cover or both the seat and cover depending on whether it thinks you're about to stand or sit. It'll also detect if any solids are in there and flush in either a water saving mode or full blast. Oh, and it can flush 32 golf balls at once without violating government water saving rules and in one flush. And it'll put the seat down when you leave. And it costs $5,000.

$5,000.

....uh....

I think I'll have to settle for the sink on reservoir ones for now.

Relatives

My cousin Tracy and my aunt Teresa drove up from LA to visit for a few days. We showed them around Stanford and Berkeley, and was hoping to go to SF to see the touristy stuff too but the weather isn't so good. At the least, Tracy got to see the two schools since she's graduating from high school.

When asked about what she wants to do, Tracy's not sure. Much like a lot of people I've asked. I've noticed that when we're younger, we have some sort of idea what we're going to be when we grow up but not many people end up doing what they wanted to do as a kid. In fact, most people I knew when I was in high school just sorta chose a major that their friends were doing or that their parents wanted.

Since the weather's been too windy and rainy to go show my aunt and cousin around town, she decided to show me her fortunetelling skills. She tells me this is supposed to be a good year for me. That's good to hear. Several things she noted about me is that sun/daylight, fire, dirt/land, and bright colors are supposed to be good luck. My mom says the sun part is probably true cuz most of my sports injuries were in the evening, and despite my speed-freak nature, I haven't screwed up severely snowboarding. (which is in the day) I'll second the thing about the land just because I want to build that kickass house of mine one day.

Really though, all I need for this year to be good luck is to not visit the hospital as a patient.

Las Vegas

(Late entry so I forgot some stuff)
I went to Vegas after Christmas with my college apartment-mates, my sister, and her college roommate. A few things didn't go quite as planned, but it was still fun.

The curse of apt10 continues apparently in some degree as Roger broke his collarbone at the beginning of the month. (snowboarding)

We were originally planning on going clubbing on the first and second night. But on the first night, the traffic was too much for the people driving from LA, so they arrived 3 hours later than expected. The second night, the cover for Pure was $25, and the line was huge and mostly guys.

A couple of us went to see Cirque de Soleil's Mystere, which I thought was pretty good. I kinda liked the music the most though. On the other hand, Roger and Grace both didn't like it. Oh, and dinner right before that didn't sit so well.

And finally, a lot of the food advertised for the Bellagio's holiday buffet didn't turn out so well. I mean, like kobe beef just can't be done right in a buffet without too much work.

Much of the trip involved shopping, eating, and drinking. I bought a black Kenneth Cole shirt and a pair of black A|X jeans. We did go to Coyote Ugly to hang out for a while the evening before flying out. Very crowded. Would have been nicer with more girls.
