| No, it was named after President Coolidge's baby daughter Ruth, who had been born in the White House not long before the candy bar's introduction and was celebrated all over the country at the time. ("Celebrated" here meaning "to make a celebrity of".) By naming the candy bar in honor of baby Ruth, the makers hoped to pick up on this notoriety. Associating their product with a baby provided a solidly positive image. Associating it with the hard-drinking Babe would of had a number of negative ones. Also, at that time the idea of celebrity endorsement had not caught on.

The company's official explanation is that the candy bar is named after Ruth Cleveland, but she died seventeen years before the candy bar was named. Meanwhile, The Bambino was the biggest up-and-coming name in sports, when the candy was introduced. So maybe they did name it after a president's daughter, but that's not the way I'm betting. See Snopes.

Oops. I wouldn't have written my post if I had gotten the President who was Ruth's father wrong. A google search on Baby Ruth turned up references to Ruth Coolidge, and I foolishly jumped to the conclusion she was Coolidge's daughter, without bothering to check the sites. As the daughter of Coolidge born in the White House, the story of the Baby Ruth bar being named after her would have made sense, but you are right. A child of a different president, who died 17 years before the candy bar was named, is an unlikely choice for namesake. Especially when compared to a man who was at the height of his celebrity at the time.
