chia

Chia Okwu, Therapist

Hi my name is Chia Okwu and I am a first- year PhD student at UC Berkeley. I am a sleep therapist on the Teen Sleep Study at the Golden Bear Sleep and Mood Research Clinic. Sleep is a universal experience! I enjoy working with teens and sleep treatment because adolescent hood is all about the unfamiliar, yet exciting world of transitions. What better way to help teens entering this world of transitions, than to help them navigate and potentially overcome challenges regarding a process we all experience: sleep. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking and tasting different cuisines from different parts of the world (Yes, I am a foodie!) I like traveling on a budget and I have visited most of the major metropolitan cities in the country. Abroad, I have visited Brazil, as well as several countries in Europe and West Africa. My other hobbies include hiking, exercising and playing kickball for fun. I truly look forward to meeting you!

Chia Okwu has over seven years of experience as a researcher in university settings, and over eight years of experience as a counselor and educator to youth ages 4 to 21. Ms. Okwu completed her B.A in Psychology at the California State University, Long Beach. She graduated with Honors as a result of her participation in the National Institute of Mental Health Career and Opportunities in Research two-year Fellowship Program (NIMH COR). As a NIMH COR Fellow, she completed Master-level courses in psychology and research methodology in which focused on Clinical Psychology, Insomnia, Depression and comorbidity; while successfully completing her undergraduate courses. After graduating from college, Chia applied the skills she learned as a NIMH COR Fellow to her research experience at UCSF. From a UCSF Intern to a Research Associate, she fulfilled a wide range of duties  including: writing and submitting protocols, papers and grants; recruiting and screening participants; facilitating assessments, data collection and analysis; conducting one-on-one interviews, focus groups and follow-ups using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. As counselor and educator, Ms. Okwu has created dynamic psychoeducatonal interventions to help teens overcome depression, tackle social anxiety and improve their overall well-being. She will be working with Dr. Harvey’s sleep research team at UC Berkeley as a sleep therapist.
