Me and Sleepy
Sleepy is not my first hamster.
In fact, I had 8 hamsters at on point. Why you ask? The story
goes something like this...
When I decided to get some
hamsters for pets, I got 4 of them at the pet store. I figured the
more the merrier, right? I certainly didn't want just one hamster
because it'll be lonely being all by itself in its cage. (Erick thinks
it's a good idea)
-One month later...
Erick: Hmm, why is this hamster
so darn FAT?
-February 7, 1997...
Hamster cage: Squeak, squeak,
squeak!!!
Erick: Huh?
(Erick looking into the hamster
cage)
Erick: Oh, @$#&!!!
Erick: I guess I have 8 hamsters
now!
My bright idea of keeping a
few hamsters together wasn't such a bright idea after all. Let's
just say that the hamsters were quite friendly with each other! And
I wondered for a while why they were so loud at night!
Due to their short gestation
period, it didn't take long before I found out the reason for the raucous
from the cage in the middle of the night, every night.
After the babies had grown
their own coat of fur and weaned from their mother, I kept just one of
the li'l critters. I returned the rest of 'em to the pet store, no
refund of course...
It's been almost 2 years now,
and Sleepy seems as content as ever - sleeping all day long, running on
the wheel all night long. What more could you ask for?
So my advice is if you want
more than one hamster, be sure you know what you're getting... although
it's next to impossible to tell the sex of a fuzzball... Sleepy is probably
a female... but who knows for sure?
