The G. Ames Lab

P.I. : Giovanna Ferro-Luzzi Ames

Staff : Calvin Hu,  David Kreimer, Kishiko Nikaido, Iris Wang, Sue Zhang

Undergrad : Erick Lin (recent graduate, soon to be hired!)

Goals

The research conducted in our lab focuses on the histidine permease transport system of the Salmonella typhimurium.  We are interested in elucidating the mechanism of signal transduction across the membrane-bound complex HisQMP2 through an interaction with the periplasmic receptor HisJ.  The interaction of HisJ with the HisQMP2 complex induces ATP hydrolysis in the HisP subunits of the complex and allows for substrate translocation across the inner membrane of the bacteria.

Current work includes studies of HisP mutants, developing HisM antibodies, and chemical cross-linking analysis.

Location:

Interesting facts:

1) I've found reagents and solutions sitting on the shelves of the lab that are older than me!

2) Someone had his head shaved when he first started working in the lab.  Picture outside 310 Barker Hall.

Records:

We have one of the largest collections of mutants around.  I believe we have at least 2,000 or 3,000 natural mutantion isolated over the years as well as mutants created via in vitro mutagenesis.
