Go Bears!!!

I ain't much of an artist, but the sentiments are good.

I'm a sophomore at Cal right now.  It's the finest school in the world!

I'm a really big fan of Cal history and traditions. That's why I joined the UC Rally Committee. My own personal Rally page features my thoughts on what it means to be a Cal Bear and a UC Rally Committee member.

My favorite part of Berkeley history is "The Play." In 1982, the fearless Golden Bears defeated the Trees from Leland Stanfurd Junior University on a kickoff return with time running out through the Stanfurd band. Hear it or read it by clicking on these links.

Which, speaking of Stanfurd, check out my RIVALRY page. I do need to update it. Another great resource is The Stanfurd Sucks Homepage. There is another good Stanfurd Sucks page done by Adam Dimant. Check them out!

As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of Golden Bear sports, especially football. I used to have the scores posted on my web page, but I took them down. Time to look ahead. Steve Mariucci is now coaching the 49ers, and Tom Holmoe is our new head football coach. I wish Coach Holmoe the best of luck.

Our basketball team didn't do too shabby last season. They finished the season 21-8 (12-6 in conference). The amazing thing is that they did not lose twice to any league opponent. An NCAA tournament bid is looking good for these Golden Bears after an emotional victory over #12 Arizona. Coach Braun is a genius! And the Pac-10 agreed...they named Coach Braun the Pac-10 coach of the year.

The NCAA gave Cal a #5 seed in the East after the victory over Arizona. Unfortunately for the Bears, the first round opponent was #12 seed Princeton, the darling of the tourney. Princeton managed to defeat defending champs UCLA the year before. Things were not looking great for the Golden Bears. But the Bears...THE BEARS HAVE WON! The Princeton ghost has left the stadium. Then the Bears faced off with #4 Villanova. The experts said, "There's no way Cal can win this one." (just like Princeton). But Cal showed them. They beat Villanova to advance to the sweet 16 for only the second time in the '90s. Even if they are sent home by North Carolina, it's been a great season. Ain't it great to be a Bear!

Ed Grey was really lighting up the scoreboard! Unfortunately, he suffered a season ending injury during the game with WSU. He ended his Cal career in style by scoring 48 points (a school record) against WSU. Congratulations, Ed, for being named Pac-10 Player of the Year. It's been an awesome season. Thanks for the memories, Ed.

Which, last season was Harmon's last season. It's too bad. I liked our quaint old gym. It was really hard for road teams to play in Harmon because it's so small and the fans are right up to the court. It will be nice to get our new Haas Pavillion, but I will always be glad I was allowed to watch one season of basketball at Harmon (and even play basketball on the fabled hardwood.) Go Bears!

Let's talk Rugby. Cal's rugby team is known far and wide as the most dominant team in the country! They regained the Scrum Axe from Stanford and beat a Canadian team in Canada. The rest of the season is looking good for the defending champion Golden Bear Rugby team!  And it did, as the Bears claimed another national title.  There is no other rugby program as good as ours.

This years football team staggered to a 3-8 record.  However, it's still important to cheer for the Bears.  They were a young team this year, and they WILL be better next year.  The defense did a nice job.  Highlight of the season was the Big Game.  Even though the Bears ended up losing the game 21-20, they went in the locker room at the half with the score 21-10.  That's right, the Card  Trees couldn't score at all in the second half.

And the basketball Bears are having a bit of a hard time too.  Forced to play at the New Arena, the probationed Bears aren't winning as many games.  What does it matter, we're not going to the tourney this year?  Well, it would have been nice to beat Stanfurd, and it would have been nice to ruin the Bruins, but it's okay.  This is a rebuilding year.

Go home.
Go Bears!
'furd Sucks!
