Assignment 2 due the week of 9/30

Reading assignment: Please read the sections on Qi, Yin Yang, 5 phases, and applications: p. 46-54, 59-65, (66-70 optional), 70-80, 87- 94

Writing assignment:
1)Write your name and SID number on your paper. If you didn't give me your email address on last weeks assignment, include that. I will be emailing people if I find their papers unacceptable. If you don't provide your email address you will have to find that out on your own somehow.

2) (~300 words) What is Qi? How does what Kane told you about Qi differ than what Sivin writes about Qi? Why do you think these differences exist? Is Kane just plain wrong?

3) (brief answer) A person exihibits depression, anger, favors sour foods, indecision, and greenish-yellowish fingernails. Which of these conditions are yin (and relative to what)? Which element(s) may be imbalanced? Is this excess or deficiency? Which channels? Which channels regulate the channels you just selected?

4) (~200 words) Find a partner/guinea pig and test flexibility (touch toes) and loosness of the shoulders and neck. Perform a few slow channel traces on him/her (skip areas that may make your partner uncomfortable). Start with Lung and go in the cycle shown in class. Now gently hold each of the source points in sucession for 5 of your partner's slow, deep breaths (in through nose, out through mouth, movement in belly not chest). HAVE YOUR PARTNER DRINK A GLASS OF WATER AFTERWARDS. Is there a change in flexibility or neck and shoulder tension? What did your partner feel/think? How about you? Comment on anything you noticed or experienced, liked or disliked.
