Quality of Groundwater

Groundwater quality varies from region to region. Surface water quality varies because of erosion, runoff, pollution, plant matter, animal waste, and other possible contaminants. Pore spaces in aquifer naturally purify the groundwater, work like a coffee filter which traps sediments and other particles.

However, this process doesn’t ensure that groundwater cannot be contaminated. Quality also depends on geology, climate, and land use. Many naturally occurring chemicals in groundwater come from dissolving rocks, soil, and decaying plant material. In most cases it comes from human activities, they increase the concentration of salts, minerals, and nitrates in the water. It gets impacted by concentrations of pesticides, nutrients, heavy metals, gasoline additives, and other chemicals are rising or falling.
