Indigenous groups and their main locations were chosen for this study as one of the proxy populations to identify environmental injustices and their relation to the vulnerability of certain Mexicans groups. The geographic locations where these ethnic groups live have been identifies as relevant areas of study. Environmental justice research must place extra attention to activities that might have a negative impacts on these populations:

A clear pattern in Mexico is that southern states have a larger share of indigenous populations. Chiapas has the largest share, while indigenous populations in states like Zacatecas or Colima represent a minimal share.

Indigenous population as a share of the total population of each Mexican State.

The following map gathers specific information about major indigenous groups in Mexico, such as location and spoken language. A relevant observation is that some states that might have presence of indigenous groups over large areas are not always those states that have larger shares of indigenous populations. The first metric is in terms of population and the second in terms of geography. Hoovering over it will display this information.
