Phillies Reload for 2003 Season
by Steven Hough

12/21/2002 -- The Phillies have made several significant acquisitions this offseason to bolster their team for the 2003 season.

The Phillies traded backup catcher Johnny Estrada to the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Kevin Millwood, who was 18-8 with a 3.24 ERA last season.

Earlier, the Phillies signed Indians free agent first baseman Jim Thome. Last season, Thome hit .304 with 52 homeruns and 118 RBI. Thome got a six-year, $85 million contract.

The Phillies also acquired Giants free agent third baseman David Bell. Bell hit .261 with 20 homeruns and 73 RBI last year for the National League champion Giants. Bell takes over at third base for Scott Rolen, who was traded to the Cardinals last season. Bell received a four-year, $17 million contract.

With these additions, the Phillies seem poised to contend in the National League East next season. The Phillies rotation is likely to be Millwood, Randy Wolf (11-9, 3.20 ERA in 2002), Vicente Padilla (14-11, 3.28), former #1 draft pick Brett Myers, and Brandon Duckworth. The projected lineup is All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins, second baseman Placido Polanco, rightfielder Bobby Abreu (.308 average, 20 homeruns, 85 RBI in 2002), leftfielder Pat Burrell (.282, 37, 116), first baseman Thome (.304, 52, 118), All-Star catcher Mike Lieberthal, third baseman David Bell, and rookie Marlon Byrd.

Phillies finish up 2001 Season
by Steven Hough

10/06/2001 -- The Phillies wrap up their 2001 season in Cincinnati this weekend, having clinched second place in the NL East and their first winning record since 1993.

The Phillies were not eliminated from the race until last night. First year manager Larry Bowa has done an excellent job coaching this young team.

Looking to the off-season, the top priority is signing third baseman Scott Rolen to a contract extension. Rolen, whose contract expires after the 2002 season, provides Gold Glove caliber defense and strong offense for the Phillies. In addition, the Phillies could stand upgrades in the bullpen and rotation, and better hitters at centerfield and first base.

With a new stadium being built to open in a few years, hopefully the team will make the necessary moves to contend in 2002.
