Purchasing Power & Race
Purchasing Power & Race
Plagiarism proliferation creates yet another disadvantage to students of color. The minority students that tend to come from low-income backgrounds don't have the purchasing power to buy essays online, which in turn affects their academic performance in classes like English. That in turn affects the relative quality of their college admissions essays.
Most concerning to scholars of color is that some sites make it possible to purchase college application essays, thereby giving students who have such purchasing power an edge over low-income students, adding to the already existing inequities between low and high-income college-bound students.
Internet Availability
This is a relatively new social phenomenon since use of the internet, the hub for plagiarism proliferation, is also relatively new. Adding to this inequity is the fact that low-income black students (and other students of color) are less likely to have internet access than low-income white families.
