The Design for Emerging and Nanoscale Manufacturing research group is led by Associate Professor Hayden Taylor and based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Our mission is to invent, model, and develop effective simulation methods for a new generation of manufacturing processes, to reduce energy consumption and materials usage and thereby accelerate industrial decarbonization.

The group’s work currently pursues three inter-related themes:

1. Multiscale additive manufacturing, focused primarily on materials and computation for the volumetric light-based manufacturing process of Computed Axial Lithography (CAL) that we have introduced.

2. Contact mechanics in semiconductor manufacturing, in particular nanoimprint lithography, chemical–mechanical planarization, and mechanical exfoliation and transfer of 2D materials.

3. Materials for sustainable construction, including digitally manufactured concrete–polymer composites and experimental approaches to low-cost air-conditioning and -filtration.

Prior work has included plasma etch modeling, polymer bonding, and metrology methods in the manufacturing of polymeric microfluidics.
