I don't think that the world is any more fucked-up than it used to be. I think that our general shock at the atrocities committed daily on our planet has nothing to do with this period of history being any more or less terrible than any other; our general shock comes at the atrocities themselves. Since the dawn of history, I believe, we have always been amazed and appalled at the evil and destruction that can come from the hands of our fellow humans. We look at the world and say, "How is that possible?" And then we think, "When did it get so bad? Surely it must have been better than this in the past." I am here to tell you that, no, it wasn't better in the past, and it got so bad at the very beginning.

Either embrace the darkness, or attempt to resolve it. I believe both are possible. But don't be amazed that the darkness exists now, or ever. It always has, from the beginning. Go ahead and be disgusted and shocked, but remember that the more we stand there and simply raise our hands to the air in amazement, the less we'll get done.
