Notes Notes Notes
Here are some notes of note:

  • Jackpot Records will release the 1984 Green River demos on vinyl for Record Store Day in April, 2016. After that may come Sub Pop expanded reissues of the other two records. For now, put that in the same category as that new record they were talking about recording circa 2009. We're still waiting on that one.
  • There are no more shows planned in 2015 after this West Coast tour ends. There is preliminary talk of an April, 2016 Seattle show. Details TBD.
  • There's an archived video of yesterday's hair salon show from PressureDrop TV. Be sure to check out 'Behind the Door,' which they've just started playing live. There's also a live audio broadcast tonight's LA show via Spaceland Radio. No word on whether this will be archived.
  • Speaking of 'Behind the Door,' a studio recording of it is now available on You Can't Kill Rock 'N' Roll, a compilation to benefit Eddie Spaghetti as he battles cancer.
  • Aggronautix is pre-selling a combo pack that includes The Color of Noise, an Amphetamine Reptile Records documentary; a Mark Arm throbblehead doll; and a triple LP compilation of the Dope, Guns, & Fucking in the Streets: 1988-1998 Volume 1-11 triple LP compilation, which features Mudhoney, The Thrown Ups, and Guy's Lubricated Goat. At the link is also a clip of Jello Biafra talking about how awesome Mudhoney is, taken from the documentary.

New Show

Added details for the October benefit show in Seattle to the Tour page. More new shows will come along in due time. (Thanks to Andy N.)

Monday, August 24
Stooges Tribute Recap

8/25/15 The Pike Place Market. Seattle, WA (30 min)
Attendance: 8,800
Supported By: (no one)
Set: Little Doll (w/1969), T.V. Eye, I Got a Right, I Need Somebody, Down on the Street, Search and Destroy, Loose
Notes: This was a free show, with the band playing on top of the Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle, right in front of the giant neon "Public Market Entrance" sign. The band is Mark, Mike McCready (guitar, Pearl Jam), Duff McKagan (bass, Walking Papers and Guns N' Roses), and Barrett Martin (drums, Walking Papers and Screaming Trees). The show was free, with very expensive VIP packages (up to $1,000) benefitting radio station KEXP's new studio, and also the Pike Place Market Foundation, which is an actual charity. Mike had been talking about doing a Stooges tribute band with Mark for a few years (they had done 'Search and Destroy' together at some of the Mudhoney and Pearl Jam shows in 2011), and he spearheaded this (he's got a semi-ceremonial role in fundraising for KEXP's new studios). So, they shut down Pike Street and Pike Place in front of the market, along with a bit of 1st Ave, and people flooded the streets to be rocked. The production even included a barricade and security down on the street, just in case the stage being on top of the roof wasn't enough to keep people from rushing it. Mark has performed some of these songs before - Mudhoney did a version of '1969' (as '1989') at their 12/31/88 gig; he sang 'T.V. Eye' and 'Little Doll' (along with other Stooges songs) with the Wylde Ratttz (the latter being unreleased); he sang 'I Need Somebody' on Nebula's To the Center LP; and in addition to the Mudhoney and Pearl Jam collaboration on 'Search and Destroy' in 2011, Green River also performed that song a few times. The bit of '1969' that he throws into 'Little Doll' comes near the end of the song, when he sings the lines (while changing the ages), "Last year I was 51 I didn't have a lot of fun / And now I'm gonna be 52, I say oh my and boo-hoo." Also, Mark is 53, so he lied there. Then, during the breakdown ending of 'Down on the Street,' he introduces the guys, using a few of their earliest, least known bands. For example, it's Barrett from Skin Yard, Duff from the Vains, Fastbacks, and Fartz/10 Minute Warning, and Mike from Warrior and Shadow. The seven songs they play are all the songs they rehearsed (and it was originally going to be six, so they expanded by one). There was initial talk of doing 'I Wanna Be Your Dog,' but Mark was persuasive in suggesting that that song has been over-covered.

(Thanks to Toby W. for setlist help)

Added the setlist and notes for this weekend's shows to the Tourbook.

Notes
Catching up with recent happenings:

  • Mudhoney has a Seattle benefit gig in October with details TBD.
  • Mark is definitely not playing a set of Stooges covers with Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Duff McKagan (Walking Papers/Guns N' Roses), and Barrett Martin (Walking Papers/Screaming Trees). But if he was, that'd be in Seattle soon and announced as soon as the organizers can get their act together, which should be done with plenty of time for people to make plans to attend.
  • Steve's Phantom Ships are playing The Foggy Notion in Portland on August 14, supporting Panzer Beat and Hellamondo.
  • They also have an album out, with vinyl coming soon.
  • They also also have a split single coming out, with Dan's Tripwires taking the other side.

New Show

They've got another Seattle show in August, on the Tour page.

New Records
Sub Pop has released represses of the Since We've Become Translucent and Under a Billion Suns LPs, and they're available in the Sub Pop Mega Mart. The first batch of these represses are available on Loser Edition colored vinyl. The records are some form of a remaster and may have slight sonic differences from the original versions. They lost the parts used to press the records, so cut new ones. And when they did this, they just checked that the new master taken from the tapes sounded good, rather than directly comparing it to the old masters. Also, Steve's Phantom Ships have three 45s coming out soon. Test pressings have been made and are being considered.

Steve had a busy day yesterday. As DJ Dollar Bin, he spun records at Jackpot Records and Everyday Music in Portland for Record Store Day. Then, at night did an improv set as Midnight Sun at Valentine's with Leighton Beezer (Thrown-Ups), Carla Torgerson, and Fredo Ortiz. Tonight, he's playing some acoustic songs at the Landmark Saloon. Also active yesterday was the reclusive Matt Lukin. He played 'Louie Louie' with The Sonics at Easy Street Records in Seattle. Other guests included Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Van Connor and Mark Pickerel of Screaming Trees, Ben Shepard of Soundgarden, Chris Ballew of The Presidents..., and Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening. Lukin and Eddie Vedder were marked on the setlist as doing 'Have Love Will Travel,' but neither one of them plaed on it. Mark was invited to perform, but was out of town.

Happy Birthday, Mudhoney!

Mudhoney is 27 years old today, commemorating the first band practice held by the original four - Dan, Mark, Matt, and Steve.

2015 is shaping up to be focused on Europe, with a ton of dates already scheduled for there - along with the Seattle date in a few weeks. And other things will no doubt pop up as the year moves on.

This site is also celebrating its birthday today. Thanks to everyone who's written in with something to share with their fellow fans. This site wouldn't be half of what it is without people kindly doing that. If you have something to share, please email ptn@ocf.berkeley.edu
